We found out this morning that DH is definitely retiring from the military. So 11 months from now he will be a civilian once again. I am so excited, but scared all at the same time, he went into the military at 18 so this is the only job he has ever known. Wow!

(Jeanne, if you read this please don't tell my mom, I haven't called her just yet! Thanks.)

Congratulations on starting a whole new chapter in your lives. Good luck to both of you. Do you know what he plans on doing when he's retired?

Will you all stay in Italy or come to the States?

By the way....CONGRATS!::yes::

Wow! What a life change. I bet this new chapter in your lives will be so exciting. You have so many decisions to make. He can always apply to be a CM!

Ironic! Mine is putting in his paperwork for January 2005. I'm feeling the exact same way you are - excited and scared! This has been my life for 18 of his 20+ years, and it's going to be strange not seeing him in a uniform every day.

Good luck to you!

YEEE HAAAA!!!! :wizard: May all your wishes come true!

I think that you will enjoy civilian life, it takes a while to become accustomed to civilians.... LOL...... but they are a grand bunch once you become aware of ''their'' lifestyle! Silly goose!

TC, we are still up in the air about that one, it all depends on where DH can find a decent job.

CBRorBust, we will be out of Italy as soon as possible. Right now we are shooting for the end of summer, but it will be a month or two before we know for sure.

cindysteve, it would never happen, DH is the anti-Disney one in this family. :(

mckryan, than we are right behind you for February of 2005. When we retire we will be married 18-1/2 years so I know what you are feeling. Good luck to you too.

Joan, I have heard this. The military has been our way of life since I was 19 years old...it will be very different indeed.

You and me both! I was 19 when we got married. I can't imagine trying to do this from Europe, but I know all will work out. My PM is open any time if you want to compare notes on the stresses of this transition!

How wierd, I was just thinking about you and wondering when you would be coming back home! Great news, and I totally understand the "excited and scared". I was born into the Navy and then married a Navy man. When we got out of the Navy, I felt really lost, (too many choices--the Navy doesn't give you a lot of choices, lol).

Took a little while, but we adjusted:D , and he has been out for 26 years :earseek: now.

I'm here for ya, just give me a holler.

Congrats to you and your family!!! DH retired 6/91 after 20.5 years in the Submarine Service. His initial job involved travelling every week M-F and sometimes for two weeks in a row. Nothing compared to the Navy. But after a few years of that, he decided that he'd had enough travelling. The company he was working for liked him so much they 'made' an office position for him and he's been employed there ever since. We were married when I was a month shy of 19 so I know what you mean when you say it's all you'd ever known.

Again, good luck as you DH looks for employment and a new place to settle in!
Lois
