It's Mardi Gras time!(a little long)

Ah memories! lol I remember people like that, glad to know that it isn't just the natives that act like idiots for beads! I would always end up next to the guy trying to hold his beer in one hand and then jump and try to catch beads with the other. I always smelled like a brewery!

As an adult, if I even come close to beads that a child was close to catching, and just give it to them. Why snatch, they'll just end up in a box in storage!

Yep, there are Crazies everywhere. :rotfl:
For the most part, when I take the kids, people are pretty nice and helpful to them, but there always seems to be a few at each parade that want to shove them (and anybody else in their way) out of the way for the beads. :confused3 Don't understand it.

A little insider tip to anybody that wants the really good stuff at the parades: Bring A Kid. Last year, DD and DS brought home so much stuff we couldn't carry it in the 4 bags we brought with us. They had so many beads, their little necks literally disappeared into thin air. It took DAYS to get the beads unwound from around their necks. :confused3 DD had stuffed animals, Barbie dolls, several flowers from the Shriners, (okay, yes, I did have to give a peck on the cheek for those  ) doubloons, moon pies out the ying yang, even a Hula Hoop. :thumbsup2

You have to hold them up high and once you make eye contact, those people will throw the kids just about anything. We even got some Mickey Mouse beads. :goodvibes I never got stash like that in my childless days!

Funny story, we were at DW last year at Spectromagic. The lights were just gorgeous, the music was playing, we were really feelin' the love when DD4 yells "Throw me somethin' Mister!"

I had to explain to her that DW does not throw goodies at their parades. I still don't think she understands why. I don't think DH does either. His philosophy is that as much money as we pay to go to DW, the least they could do is throw us a moon pie every now and then. :teeth:

lol I completely agree. We went to two small parades already, and I have a ton more stuff then I used to catch alone!

I never understood the concept of any parade that didn't throw anything. Everyone around the Dis gets so excited about the Macy's Thanksgiving day parade....I am always :confused3 what they don't throw anything and it's FREEZING outside! No thanks! ;)

Yep, :goodvibes Now we know that it's not only us who go crazy for Mardi Gras! lol :thumbsup2 Some people just really want the beads I guess! :confused3 lol ;)

And I would do the same thing; If I had caught a lot of beads and I saw a child with none (or just a few) I would gladly give mine up for them. It's just the right thing to do.....I guess since I've just always been taught that. :confused3 But, holidays and parades sometimes seem to bring out the worst or competitive part of people. ;) lol

:rotfl: I have been stomped for a moon pie. For the unenlightened a moon pie is a snack of two large crumbly cookies with marshmellow in between, dipped in chocolate. :crazy2: some are dipped in banana flavoring, but the ones at Mardi Gras are always chocolate. the krewes throw them from the floats as they pass and people scramble like they're starving to get them. You can buy them at the store; I think Little Debbie makes them. They are totally disgusting but kids love 'em :thumbsup2 and Mardi Gras wouldn't be teh same without moon pies.

Ok! Now I know what they are. I have had one of those before. It was chocolate.

Oooooooooo, I  Mardi Gras! I really wish I could have been there this year! I think I'm gonna have to order me a king cake! The ones they try to pass off around here are :crazy2:

BTW, I find moon pies at our local dollar store here. They carry the chocolate and banana :thumbsup2

I had some king cake the other day, and I'll tell you after the year we have been through, it never tasted so good!

Thank you for the info, this is an event we have wanted to attend, but weren't sure if we should with a child. Thanks for getting the facts out there!

We have an event in our area called Gasparilla, which is a much smaller scale than Mardi Gras but has the same reputation for "debauchery" when in reality most of the events are completely family friendly. We spent the day at one today.

If you ever want to attend with Aiden just email me (there are plenty other Disers out there too) and we can give you the best locations for viewing with children! I have been almost evey year since I was 6 mos old. The only times I missed were either due to a Disney vacation, when I was preggers for Kurt jr, and one year I was grounded.

MrsKreamer, thanks for the Mardi Gras thread! I am originally from New Orleans and my parents still live in Metairie. I will be going HOME in a couple of weeks for my first visit since Katrina.
