Why wait! I have lots of pictures of my kids sleeping. You can get some really adorable close-ups.

Another vote for getting shots while he/she is sleeping - you don't have to ask them to stay still!

I'll be happy to wait if I have a supermodel taking a nap in the next room, but I assume that's not what you mean.

Nap photos can be fun. Here's one I did in March... it was very dark in the room (curtains drawn) so I put the camera on my tripod and ended up with a 6-second exposure, which I then pushed another stop or two in post-processing... you'd never know that it a long exposure except that the tag on his shirt is blurred slightly from his breathing.
