My Rebel XT came today! DD's 11th birthday party at the ice rink is tomorrow night, so I'll have my first challenge to play with.

Wow, you have a tough first assignment. An ice rink is one of the hardest venues to shoot. There is never enought light, everyone is moving so fast (not the way I skate though) and all the white ice can really through your white balance for a loop.

If this is your first SLR, keep the shutter speed faster than 1/focal length. And don't be afraid to boost your ISO all the way to 1600, I tend to prefer a photo with a little noise rather than motion blur.

You may want to set a custom white balance if you have a lot of ice in your photos, just remembe to change it back when the ice is out of your picture.
