It's complicated! Splitting 1 reservation into 2 completely separate ones?

We were planning to come to Disney around Christmastime, but for a million different reasons, we've decided to spend most of that time down in the Keys instead. (We just went there for the 1st time last week, and I fell in love!). My question is:

Are they able to split an existing reservation into 2 separate ones (completely separate people)? We'd still like to go 12/21 & 12/22--just to give the kids a small amount of Disney time. The reason I'm not able to just cancel the unwanted days (I think) is because I bought these points from another DVC'er and thus, they are transferred points. So I'm thinking of just trying to rent out the existing reservation for 12/16-12/21. I feel like this is my best bet to not lose money. Does anyone know if it's possible to turn 1 reservation into 2 separate ones?

Only if there is currently availability for those dates. They would need to shorten the reservation first. Then they would need to rebook the 2nd portion.

Thanks for your reply! I'm wondering if they do it all right then, if it will work, or if someone can swoop in and pick those days up? Ay yi yi--why is Disney planning always so worriesome?! 😩

What’s the expiry on your points? Either the transferred in ones or your own? Could you just not shorten the reservation for the dates you want to keep and then use the leftover points at another time? Or you could even rent out those points separately rather than a confirmed reservation?

As noted, to change the reservation as desired, you would need to first modify the existing reservation by dropping some nights and then attempting a new reservation for those dropped nights. If the portion of the reservation you are dropping is itself still separately available it can be done. If it is not separately available, you generally cannot get back the time you want. It will be given to someone else including someone on a waitlist.

I don't know how many people are you talking about with "the kids" but if you weren't over occupancy to have everyone on the reservation you could just do that and when you leave the kids arrive but you're all on the reservation for the entire stay. You could just schedule and pay for a full cleaning or wash sheets yourselves.

If you've booked with transferred points and want to just drop some of the days and do the couple of nights yourselves then just call MS. They can cancel nights off the beginning or end of a reservation.

I think OP’s situation is that they were originally booked from Dec 16-23, but now only want to stay Dec 21-23, and rent the other part of the reservation out to a different party. Not that they want to split the reservation into 2 different stays for members of the same original travel party. At least, that is how I am interpreting it!

There are definitely some glitches with booking using transferred points. I know I had some transferred points in a reservation and couldn’t add guests. I wasn’t trying to change the lead reservation just add one more person, but the system wouldn’t allow it. I had to use the chat feature to add the second name. So if you need to modify a reservation using transferred points, you may only be able to do so by contacting member services which definitely limits things!

OP, I still think your best bet might be to modify your reso to the dates you want to keep and then try and rent out your extra points if needed. Or if you do have some time left on your points, just plan another trip! That would be my solution! Transferred points also have to be current use year so depending on the use year, those may also still be bankable? Or another solution might be to splurge on the dates you will be there. Hello CCV cabins or GFV 3-bedroom villa! Don’t mind if I do.

I can see that now. I was reading give the kids some small disney time as if they were adults and would come later.

Yes! That's exactly my situation. I don't mind banking the points (I *think* they are all still current use year)- April 2021. I just want to confirm from Disney before I cancel/modify anything because I don't want weird points in limbo or holding or whatever that stuff is with restrictions. Do you know if it specifies when you go to cancel what happens with your points? I started to cancel online, but chickened out because I couldn't tell 100% what would happen with my points. Thanks for you advice!!

If you cancel, the points will just go back into your current use year. If you click to modify the reservation (not cancel), it will give you an option to re-select which contracts you want the points taken from. So if you select your own contract, it should take banked, then borrowed points, then current use year. If you select the transferred points, it will use those. If you select both, it should use up your banked, borrowed and transferred points first before any current use year. If you have any concerns, I’d say to call member services and have them do it!

If it’s an April UY you should have lots of time to make the change since you just need to bank your points before the end of November (although make sure you do it before your 31 day window to avoid holding points). From my experience, you need to call member services to have them bank transferred points anyways. So if that ends up being your plan, might as well have them do both (modify reservation and bank transferred points) at the same time!
