It's about density

Maybe I'm a bit dense. Maybe I'm just slow. Or maybe, as my dear departed grandpa would say, I'm just plain stupid.

But I don't get it.

In the past, I have aquired hobbies or collections that I could figure our pretty quickly. It's been easy enough for me to figure out what was desirable, what wasn't, and what I just plain liked.

But I've come to a couple of conclusions tonight. The first is - maybe pin collecting isn't the greatest hobby for someone who lives 1,000 miles from the closest park. Duh.

The second is - I'll probaby never "get it" anyway. Just when I think I figure it out ("ok.. lots of people like the villians. and lots of people like chip and dale. and lots of people like ...), then I see pin #2566 and think "WTH?" Flubber? Where did that come from? Why does everyone and his brother want that one? Yeah, it's a low LE and yeah, it was a mystery pin, but... to repeat... WTH?

Oh well, I've been hitting my head against a brick wall all day anyway, so it probaby makes as much sense as anything else....

It is a low edition, mystery pin that is individually numbered.....That's why!!!

Eddie has one that is an AP....Woo Hoo...I guess that makes it even harder to get...I know he has one on his lanyard, and EVERYONE wants that pin...Why??? I couldn't tell you....

Cruise -- if truth be told, there are some pins ONLY desired because of low edition size. ;) They would appeal to very few otherwise.

Flubber is one of my most favorite pins in my collection. I got it a couple of years back, and honestly, the only reason I like it is because it is so darn cute. (of course, i'm glad it's valuable, too, in case I run out of money for food). Does Ed really wear it on his lanyard? I would be so afraid I would lose it. It can be frustrating trying to collect when you're not close to the center of activity in WDW. But its not too bad if you just try to collect what you love, and not necesssarily HTF or LE pins. Then the hard work becomes an enjoyable challenge! At least, for me.:)

I guess you had to be there... I can't tell you why it is still so popular but for those of us there... Well here is a picture. You could say it has a unique history behind its release.

And just to add more confusion to the issue, there are some low edition pins that are not terribly desireable to anyone, ie Christopher Robin LE 1000 (pinpics 8187) or Pleasure Island Mardi Gras LE 500 (pinpics 4092). Then of course, there are the high edition pins that are relatively hard to get such as MSEP Spinner LE 5000 (pinpics 3985) or Sorcerer Mickey and Donald AC LE 10,000 (yes, that's 10,000) (pinpics 1397).

You are not dense or slow or stupid:eek: All of this is what makes pin collecting so much fun! We all have stories about the pin that we judged to be nothing special, only to find that it turned out to be a "hot ticket", or the "excellent traders" that we bought ten of that are all still sitting in our trader bags. It's an icebreaker at meets when you don't know people...it's something for us all to commiserate about. :teeth: It's part of what draws us all together as friends!

I had the Flubber pin once. It was a cute pin but to me it wasn't "special"
Mickey for President was "special" to me. It has Mickey on it, that is really all I need to say.
So I traded my Flubber for Mickey for President. I am happy, the person who got Flubber is happy, and that is what pin trading is all about. Peggie

I guess that makes sense to me. Right now, half the pins on my wants list aren't really pins that I want... but I found someone who would trade my holy grail to me for one of them, so they go on my wants list in an effort to make me a mother-once-removed to my holy grail :D

I just need to realize I'm going to HAVE to take a trip to WDW in order to get some pins that are more desirable for trading to help me in my quest... oh, the horror of it all... ;)
