It's a SO-LO trip report! Oct 09, CR/YC, MNSSHP, F&W, and Independence! FINAL UPDATE!

this has been so entertaining to read nory! i'm planning my 5th trip to the world and my 2nd solo (went last August and stayed at POFQ.)

thanks again for the TR! :worship:

Hello, everyone! Still there?

I know, I know, it’s been awhile. Longer than awhile, actually. Like, over half a year or something. I wouldn’t blame you if you’ve forgotten all about me by now. Considered me lost forever. Deleted me from your subscription list. Filed me away as a “Fair-Weather Disney Friend,” someone whose Disney-love was merely a transitional life phase, like Koolaid-dying your hair in high school.

Like I said, I wouldn’t blame you. But I hope you’ll come back! I always said I’d finish this trip report, didn’t I? And now that the wedding is over (it was wonderful, and perfect, and 100% worth the insane planning), and my desk is finally free of wedding-crafts detritus (at least for now – I do still have to make the thank-you cards, of course), I can return to the DIS! Hooray! Often, in the depths of wedding-planning despair (such as: Oh no, I still have ninety invitations to hand-emboss! or Oh no, what will our two vegan friends eat? or Honey, the wedding’s two weeks away, don’t you think it’s maybe time to find a suit?), I would fantasize about WDW, and my fingers would start typing d-i-s into my browser…

But I’d always stop myself, just in time. Because, after all, those invitations weren’t going to hand-emboss themselves.

In case my pleas for mercy aren’t enticing you back (that Nory, she’s betrayed us before, it’s just not worth the heartbreak!), how about this: I went back to WDW, in May, with my mom. Which means a second TR will be coming, straight on the heels of this one! It’s like a two-for-one sale! And I may have booked myself another quick solo trip for October (we’ll see if that one actually happens; it was a totally spur-of-the-moment, I-need-something-to-look-forward-to-post-wedding-and-a-pin-code-is-sitting-in-my-inbox decision, and I’ve been putting off thinking about it with my logical brain. or even admitting it to anybody, for that matter). So TRs galore!

Anyway. To sum it up: I’ve missed you all! I’m happy to be back! And now, without further ado:

About a hundred years ago, I left you with the teaser “A WDW-Show Virgin Decides It’s Finally the Perfect Moment.” I’m sure it’s been torturing you since then, right? (Cuz it’s not like you have other things to think about, like your own lives and trips and stuff.) But it’s true—up until this, my first solo day at the Animal Kingdom, I’d never been to a live-actor Disney show at WDW. Or, at least, never in my memory (maybe back in the day when I was little, but I figure if I can’t remember it, it doesn’t count).

I decided it was time for that to change. I’d heard so many amazing things about FotLK, I was really excited to give it a try. I headed to Camp Minnie-Mickey, an entire land I think I’d never visited before, what with its congested paths and sad lack of rides. I saw these guys somewhere on my way over, who put me in the perfect mood to watch some dancing:
735072419_g34RY-L.jpg

What poise! What grace!

735074429_qxwMU-L.jpg

What beady eyes!

Oh no, I just realized that I’d been to The Little Mermaid at DHS the day before! I’m not sure why I wasn’t counting that as a live-actor show. Whoops. It really ruins my whole WDW-Show Virgin concept, doesn’t it? Oh well. Let’s just pretend it doesn’t count, OK?

I didn’t have to spend too much time with iPhone Scrabble before being greeted by this man:
970829064_mmZiW-L.jpg

Wake up, dude! The show’s about to start! Don’t worry at all about that sniper, luckily he’s got terrible aim…

Side note: I got to feel like an African princess myself, lately, because the night after our wedding, my DH’s family hosted an Ethiopian wedding for us. It was crazy, in the best way. I got to wear a poison-green dress made for me in Ethiopia (no headdress like these ladies, though), fertility songs were sung, dance challenges with unknown relatives were lost (by me—clearly I need to hone my African dance skills), blessings were bestowed that we couldn’t understand a word of (not speaking Amharic), my “tribe” and his “tribe” bartered over my new ceremonial name…it was amazing! Though also exhausting, as I’m sure you can imagine. I’m not sure I’d recommend doing two weddings in two days, though I’m happy we did. OK, thanks for bearing with me for this brief foray into wedding-land—you understand, it’s hard to quit it cold turkey!—now back to the important stuff.

Which section was I in, you ask? Was it this one?
735069644_rUuaM-L.jpg

Or this one?
735070102_xNpkZ-L.jpg

Or this one?
735068062_4o7N6-L.jpg

Or that other one, of which I apparently have no photo?

Well, I’m really sorry about this, but I just can’t remember. I’ve tried everything: hypnosis, meditation, parsing my pages of notes. But the memory’s just not there. I guess that’s what I get, for taking so long with this TR.

I do remember that I loved these silly monkeys, despite my mixed feelings about actual monkeys:
735067287_XHygE-L.jpg

And I hate to have to report that this girl was not a particularly good dancer (obviously, that is why I cut off her feet. It says nothing about my photography skills):
735068567_xujbJ-L.jpg

Lest you think I’m just being mean, here, I should tell you that I say this with some authority, as I used to study dance on a professional level. As proof, I offer this picture of myself from a gazillion years ago, before I tore a ligament in my foot and got too…um…curvy for ballet:
969416856_8TaDR-S.jpg

Overall, I was a bit disappointed with FotLK. Maybe my expectations were just too high. I did love its energy, and the voices were great, but having seen The Lion King on Broadway (which has the most incredible sets and costumes ever), it just couldn’t compare. I do see how kids would go nuts over it, and I’ll probably appreciate it more when I see it with someone under the age of 10. This adorable little girl next to me—maybe two or three?—danced on her dad’s lap through the entire show, and she was clearly having the time of her life. I wanted to take a picture of her. But I figured that could come off as a little creepy, so I refrained.

Clearly only one place could cure my disillusionment:
735075339_h65N3-L.jpg

First I stocked up on yet another EE FP, then I used my first FP of the morning and rode again. It was my third trip down Everest so far that day, and I still had two FPs in my pocket. Would I use them? Would I ever get over my mild FotLK disappointment, and decide to give WDW shows another try? I guess you’ll just have to wait and see. But I promise you won’t have to wait so long, this time!

Coming Soon – Nory Falls in Love at Animal Kingdom

Good lord, do my eyes deceive me or is that you Norybell? Hold on, let me rub the sleep out of my eyes...yup you're back!:woohoo: I have persevered, kept your TR in my subscribed list and now I reap the reward of your update!:woohoo:

Firstly, congratulations on the wedding.:goodvibes It must feel wonderful to have the planning mayhem behind you, it did for me! I can totally commiserate with you on the groom's suit too...DH left it till the last minute and I was having panic attacks over it! Ethiopian ceremony? Wow, sounds really amazing. You should post a pic. I find other cultures fascinating so this sounds pretty darn cool!

This update is hilarious by the way! I sure hope that Lion King fella was able to outsmart the sniper! Just last month I saw the broadway production of the Lion King and man, it was incredible. Doesn't compare at all to the one at Animal Kingdom. The costumes, scenery and singing was gorgeous. So I can understand your less than stellar review of the AK version. I remember that bird like lady who did some form of ballet on stage. It looked awkward, didn't it? Anyhow, my 3DD's are all in ballet and my youngest one keeps asking when she can start pointe. I'm like, honey, you're only 7 so it'll be a little while longer! She doesn't believe me and I just know she's going to march into the director's office and ask for herself!

Ahh, Expedition Everest. Best ride in DW. The theming alone is worth walking through but the ride itself is fabulous. Last time we went, we rode it 4 times in a row thanks to rope drop!

I hope your May trip was special with your Mom. Was that before the wedding?

An October solo trip? Great idea! I really would love to attempt that someday but DH took great offense to it when I casually mentioned it! The idea of strolling around, snapping pics of obscure things, eating when I wanted to and not having to take any of my kids to the bathroom, well that's just a little slice of heaven sister!

Looking forward to the rest and the new ones you're planning!:goodvibes

Hello, everyone! Still there?
Just barely.

I know, I know, it’s been awhile.
That's putting it mildly.

I may have forgotten (briefly), but I will NEVER give up on you.

And now that the wedding is over (it was wonderful, and perfect, and 100% worth the insane planning), and my desk is finally free of wedding-crafts detritus (at least for now – I do still have to make the thank-you cards, of course), I can return to the DIS! Welcome back! And congratulations! Weddings are awesome, aren't they? Especially your own.

We missed you, Nory.

I consider the Mermaid show more of a mild annoyance than anything else, so it's easily forgotten.

Or that other one, of which I apparently have no photo?
:rotfl:

Yep, get used to saying that.

I now bow to your professional dancing wisdom-ness.

Overall, I was a bit disappointed with FotLK. Maybe my expectations were just too high. I did love its energy, and the voices were great, but having seen The Lion King on Broadway (which has the most incredible sets and costumes ever), it just couldn’t compare.
I agree...I think it's an entertaining show, but there are better WDW shows out there. And to compare it to the BROADWAY show? Pffffft. No comparison.

So good to have you back! I missed your witty and hilarious writing.

Welcome back Nory. It's great to see you posting again!

like Koolaid-dying your hair in high school.

Huh? I must have missed that one.

Side note: I got to feel like an African princess myself, lately, because the night after our wedding, my DH’s family hosted an Ethiopian wedding for us. It was crazy, in the best way. The warthog! The warthog!

Holy smokes! You're like totally balancing on your toe there Nory!

Aw, sorry to hear that. FotLK was the first thing we ever did at WDW back in 2001, which was our kids' first trip. We didn't even know what it was, we just wandered back in that direction and the show was about to start. We thought it was awesome, but we didn't have any expectations.

Just barely.

That's putting it mildly.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Pots and kettles and blackness...I can't even get the phrase out I can't believe what I'm reading.

Yay! :cool1: norybell is back! Congratulations on the wedding :bride: Your Ethiopian wedding sounds spectacular... pictures! Pictures!

So you had two weddings in two consecutive days? Wow! :dance3:

Great update by the way... awesome pictures!

Welcome back! So glad to hear that everything went wonderfully with the wedding!

Welcome back! Glad to hear the wedding(s) went well; I'd love to see pics if you want to share!

Thanks, everybody! I promise to post wedding pics (both traditional and Ethiopian) as soon as I have them!

Tell her that with pointe shoes comes PAIN!!! And blood and pus and black toenails and hammer toes and early onset arthritis! :scared1:

I hope your May trip was special with your Mom. Was that before the wedding?
It was lovely, just a few months before the wedding. By that time, I really needed to get away for a few days.

I think I can make this October trip happen if I don't take any time off work, meaning I could only go for 2 nights. Which is so quick, but I think it'll be worth it!

Aw, sorry to hear that. FotLK was the first thing we ever did at WDW back in 2001, which was our kids' first trip. We didn't even know what it was, we just wandered back in that direction and the show was about to start. We thought it was awesome, but we didn't have any expectations.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to sound like a FotLK hater here, or anything! I did think it was lots of fun. Just not as awesome as I was hoping.

I'm not at work today (thankfully -- man, going back to work has been torture) so hopefully I'll get another update up today or tomorrow!

Norybell!

Good to see you again! :wave2:

I'm glad you decided to continue your TR. Great installment. We missed FotLK, so this makes me feel slightly less bad about that. We did love Nemo though.

Good choice on some EE therapy to ease your the dashing of your live show dreams.

Hi Biscuit! I would say that FotLK is worth seeing next time you're in the World, but certainly not worth beating yourself up over missing. I thought Nemo was much, much better (oops, bit of a spoiler there!).

After my third trip down the mountain, I needed a little pick me up, so I got an iced chai at Royal Ananwhatever. It was yummy. And I could swear I took a picture of it, but there’s no picture to be found. So you’ll all have to close your eyes really tight and picture an iced chai. It looked just like that. Sorry to make you work so hard for it.

My FotLK disappointment led, naturally, to much deep contemplation, praying to the Disney gods, learning to let go, and all that. Finally I reached a place of inner peace, and decided I would give WDW shows another chance. I headed to Nemo. I got there a good half-hour early, and played iPhone Scrabble for what felt like ages (which has totally paid off, by the way—thanks to this trip, I now beat DH every time we play!), but at least I got an excellent seat: no more than 10 rows back, near the center.

And as soon as the show began, I was smitten. With this guy:
969313555_T5Qrx-L.jpg

The man, not the fish.

Of course, now that I’m a married woman and all, I don’t know what I was thinking! But who knew puppeteers could be so cute? Maybe I just have a thing for geeky guys with glasses. DH, after all, is a geeky guy with glasses. And there are few things geekier than puppeteering, right?

Anyway, I spent much of the show trying to get good pictures of my new crush.
969313906_N9wnx-L.jpg

Shocked face: OMG, is that an attractive unmarried lady sitting down there, 10 rows from the front?

969314633_B5XJV-L.jpg

Sad-yet-determined face: Oh no, she has a boyfriend? I will woo her anyway!

Of course, in the process I ended up with pictures of other characters, too.
969314503_uaapd-L.jpg

Is this chick my competition? I can totally take her. Sure, I can’t sing, or flip around on a wire, but I’ve got other skills…

969313683_P4yAg-L.jpg

FISH!!!

969314412_hx7L9-L.jpg

Stay away from her, puppet man, she can’t make you happy the way I can!

What can I say, other than: I LOVED NEMO. It made up for FotLK, and then some. What a great show! I tried my best to ignore the only thing that bothered me about it (and this wasn’t any fault of the show’s)—so many people were taking photos or video by holding their iPhones up above their heads, so they could get a better shot, I guess. How annoying! Like those pictures are going to turn out, anyway! All those brightly lit screens in the air were really distracting in a dark theater. Harumph.

I walked out of the Nemo theater totally happy. And of course, at AK, there’s only one appropriate place to visit when you’re happy (incidentally, the same place to visit when you’re not happy…it works for all moods, really):
735077758_N9VsQ-L.jpg

The mountain, obviously. Not this particular spot on the path to Asia.

I rode it twice more, using my two remaining FPs. I guess that makes 5 times? I was tempted to ride it more, but, just like with ToT the previous day, I found it losing a little of its thrilling effect on me after so many repetitions. And I don’t want that! My stomach is not allowed to build up a tolerance to WDW thrill rides. I want EE to stay exciting forever!

On my way back over to Africa, I caught the tail end of the afternoon parade. I guess it was on its return trip, so the paths weren’t busy at all. I’m not usually much of a parade fan, but wow, this one is awesome! Between this and Boo to You, I may have become a parade convert.

For some reason I spent a lot of time walking apace with this puppet, trying to get an decent picture:

It must’ve been a little after 4:00 by now, and I was heading to the safari, to use my final FP. Would the animals finally decide to cooperate?

Coming Soon – Animal Kingdom, the Final Hour

And as soon as the show began, I was smitten. With this guy:
969313555_T5Qrx-L.jpg

Oh norybell! I know you were smitten by his geeky looks... in fact he looks like he lives in a school... but I bet the guy is just a clown! :rotfl:

I'm glad you enjoyed the show, I've never seen it and it's my priority for my next trip.

Also I've only ridden EE once :sad2: hopefully that would be fixed too next year :goodvibes

Great update! :thumbsup2

:lmao:I'm dying over here! Mostly because you're smitten with that puppeteer! Didn't he look cross-eyed in one of those pics? Nemo is such a creative show, we were hooked the first time we saw it and now it's a must do every trip.

How did you get such fabulous shots of the show?? I'm in awe because all of mine came out like crappola. Granted, my flash was off and I'm definitely a novice when it comes to photography! Were you sitting up front?

BTW, I think you can totally take that Dory chick too! She may be armed with a puppet but you are armed with the almighty pen. Or should I say computer? Or would computer keys be more accurate? I don't know.

Anyhow, I was interested to hear that you enjoyed the chai tea. Truth be told, I'm a bit of chai tea snob and know the local places that make a good cup:snooty:. But I wasn't thrilled with the AK one, although mine was hot which made absolutely no sense considering it was about 89 degrees outside with like 1,000% humidity!

The parade pics are great, we've never stayed long enough in the afternoon to see it. It looks good though so I may have to reconsider that too. The only parade I really like is the Halloween one at night, so cool with the headless horseman.:thumbsup2

Great update!

Congrats on Scrabble and on the seating. We were way in the back, and even though I used a zoom lens, my pictures are nowhere near as close-up as yours.

And as soon as the show began, I was smitten. With this guy:

The man, not the fish.

I totally thought you were going to say that Nemo, the fish, was really cute or something. I'm totally flummoxed. I did not see that one coming.

And there are few things geekier than puppeteering, right?

Have you ever seen "Being John Malkovich"?

Anyway, I spent much of the show trying to get good pictures of my new crush.

No, Crush is a different character.

What can I say, other than: I LOVED NEMO. It made up for FotLK, and then some. What a great show!

Glad you liked it. We did too!

Obviously he had spoken to the Nemo puppeteer backstage and had already heard all about you. ::yes::

No really...your obsession with this guy is perfectly normal.

What can I say, other than: I LOVED NEMO.
Yep. It's a good one. Waaaaaay better than FotLK.

This guy kept staring at me
That's because he was thinking about your ballet picture.

I love all the parade and Nemo pics. I'm kind of the opposite. I can take or leave the Nemo show, but I just adore FotLK. I'm always developing crushes on the tumblemonkeys. :)

Must be Karma -- I totally just spent all this time sneakily responding to you all from work, only to lose the entire post when it logged me out! Argh!

Actually, the DIS keeps logging me out lately, after like 5 minutes, which it didn't used to do. Is this my punishment, for lagging so long on my TR???

Anyway. Guess I'll have to wait til I'm home to reply.
