The above link is to a story about the reopening of It's Small World ride in Disneyland.

Personal Opinion-

This is one of the main reasons that we don't enjoy going to Disney World that much anymore. I am tired of being force fed everything Disney and this change in It's a Small World is a perfect example. What is next? Will Buzz Lightyear and Woody have a place to stand or sit in Hall of Presidents ??

What is wrong with a few rides being like a museum ? To me, Haunted Mansion, Carousel of Progress, It's a Small World, Cinderella's Carousel, Swiss Family Robinson and I could go on shouldn't be touched. They are a part of the past of Disney and should not be touched.

They just continue to dilute the Magic..........

I think its good,if you use the example of thr Pirates redo as an example, the Disney imaganeers were able to keep the spirit of the original classic ride while also adding somethin a bit current for effect which will keep young people interested...its alot better than closing it altogether

I do not believe that "it's a small world" has ever been accused of having low attendance numbers imho!

I wish they didn't change it. It is better that they left at least half of Walt's creations unchanged, or just even slightly changed. I dont like the idea of them redoing all his magic because they dont think its good enough or anything... it is alot like a museam.

I did not think the redo in Pirates of the Caribbean added anything to the attraction other than remind people of the Disney Movie and the characters that are in it. I did not see the magic myself.

I have to admit I saw more magic in POTC Curse of the Black Pearl when they re-created the scene with dog with the keys in his mouth from the ride than seeing the scenes from the movie in the ride.

I am curious of one thing.........Does anyone know if they put a gift shop at the end of It's a Small World in Disneyland with the new remodel ??

There's always been one at the end of IASW in DL as far as I can remember, you just aren't forced into it as you come over the bridge from the ride. So what's next, new plush of each of the Disney characters with their IASW costumes?

Allears has a few photos of some of the characters. They were done in the same stylings as the original dolls, I think this is a lot less invasive than the articles let on.

I can understand the uproar due to the principle of changing a classic, but Walt intended the parks to be ever changing & sometimes that means the classics. Even museums rotate out exhibits to bring people in the doors.:)

I don't want to get in to a debate about Walt would think if he were still here, but somehow I don't think he would be happy.

Marty Sklar said that Walt was the biggest change agent in all of the Walt Disney company. He was always looking for ways to plus the park. I'm all for a little update every now and then.

The question is, does this kind of change really mean plussing if it's taking away from the true meaning of the attraction?

This is probably the correct question. I don't know that it's a plus, but I don't think it takes anything away from it either & at the same time it gives you something new to look at - it's an update.

I don't think adding a handful of some of Disney's most beloved characters to an aging attraction would have Walt rolling.

They've got to keep folks on the rides. If they have a ride that isn't drawing many people to it, that leads to overcrowding in other areas of the parks & the eventual change or closure of that attraction.

Again, I like the ride as it is(at WDW) & I love the nostalgia of the classic Disney rides, but I don't think this takes away from that.

It will be interesting to see what comes of the Jungle Cruise when/if the film is ever released.

That's the thing, I haven't heard any evidence that IASW was losing any popularity to begin with.

It wasn't. It always had long lines.

That's all just a cover up.

And what irks me the most (aside from insults to Disney fans) is that the Family of Mary Blair, the lady that designed the attraction is disgusted by the changes. They consider it a desicration of Mary's artwork.
I agree.

THey could have made changes that were in keeping with the tone of the ride.

Also, some of you brought up the changes to Pirates as a positive. I have to disagree. The figures are great an all, and the Davy Jones bit is Technically impressive, but at least at DL, the Story changes are just stupid. The Davy Jones, while again impressive spits out stupid phrases that make me wish it was still a dark tunnel with a disembodied voice. The drunk Pirate with the map's lines are dumb. Actually, pretty much any dialog that mentions jack sparrow is horrid.

I would have rather they'd just kept the plot the same and put the jack sparrows in.

I haven't been on the DL one yet (going to TDL this weekend) but the WDW dialogue really irks me...it isn't subtle or unique...most of the characters now seem to have about 3 to 4 words, then CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW.

I agree, they could have added him, and had some minor references, but now it's just overdone.

The original Pirates actually had a fairly well done script to it. WDW loses a lot of it by cutting the ride short, but the Jack Sparrow stuff is just shoehorned in.

the original story is essentially about the guests getting sucked into a magical cave? in the swamp that takes them to a different time and place. The section where Jones in used to be ghostly voices warning the guests that they knew too much and were now in danger.

Now there's no cohesiveness at all. Why are we in this cave and what does it mean? Jones doesn't tell us any of that.

The people who want to keep the atractions untouched to respect Walt's vision are simply putting aside everything that Walt wanted. He always wanted the parks to keep changing, like something alive.
And c'mon, the guy loved characters! Let's not forgive it all started with a mouse, and the movies and parks all came around Mickey and other characters.
I think both It's a Small World and Pirates look great after the remodeling. It would be sad to see this great rides looking old and dated, like some do.

Who said anything about untouched?
I don't want the attractions untouched. I want them to be good.

No one wants the attractions to be untouched, but they need to be well done. I don't hear any complaints about the refurb of the Haunted Mansions in DL or WDW, because they were done very well and stayed true to the tone and storyline of the attraction.

That is the difference.
