It's a New Year for a New You Super Goofs team thread

Kim,

You did Team in Training? I thought about doing that for the Country Music half, but the fundraising aspect of it is really overwhelming for me. $4000. Yikes! I just don't know enough people who are willing to give for these kinds of things. Could you let me know how you did it?

Kim How could I forget! I'll be seeing you first on Friday!

Maura

Megan, I'm still fundraising, so I can't quite say I'm there yet. ;) But I'm getting closer. Fundraising is definitely the most stressful aspect of TNT, but it's highly rewarding. Check out my web page (the link at the tail end of my signature) for some specific fundraisers I tried. And please let me know if you have any suggestions for things I haven't done yet!

Beyond the events listed on my web page, here are a few tips. TNT highly encourages the letter-writing campaign, and that worked pretty well for me. I sent out my Christmas cards early with our usual family newsletter enclosed. In the letter, I devoted a paragraph to my endeavor to run the half, requested donations, and enclosed a self-addressed envelope for anybody who wished to help. (Surprisingly, my in-laws' friends were among the most generous, so NEVER rule anyone out!)

I sent an e-mail to all my coworkers and changed my personal e-mail signature line to include a brief blurb about what I'm doing and a link to my web page. This latter was a relatively inobtrusive way to ask for donations without actively soliciting people, and it resulted in a few donors I never would have expected.

One of my coaches works for a company that does matching gifts. She's not as stressed about fundraising, because she'll pick events where she feels comfortable fronting 50% of the minimum if she absolutely had to, knowing that her company will pick up the remainder. I'm not that lucky, but I can rationalize a certain amount as the money I would have paid out-of-pocket to do the event on my own plus the cost of a personal trainer, which is pretty much what the TNT coaches were for me.

A corporate sponsor can get you quite a bit of your funds in no time. My husband owns his practice, so that's where my "corporate sponsor" came from. He gets his logo on the back of our chapter's jerseys, however, so he can almost look at it like an advertising expense. Hopefully he'll get a new patient or two.

Hope this helps!
-Kim

Hey Kim, welcome back to the fray. Nice to see all the finishers are here and accounted for.

I am adopting a member of another team. Please welcome Liz (twoWDWfools) and hopefully her DH and my ToT partner, Patrick (tiggerspal222) to our band of merryment. They should be headed out to WDW shortly. Liz is doing the full and Patrick the half. Everyone wish them lots of luck.

Everyone leaving today or tomorrow, have safe travels and don't forget your pixie dust just in case!!

I did my 5 miles today and a round of ab work. So far so good. I am up on my calories today but for some reason I am having one of those hungry days...popcorn::

Mike, you know I love you...

2 miles in 21:31 tonight. I had one of those runs where I thought I could go faster if I pushed, and then I grew fearful of injuring myself, so I backed off. I will definitely need to watch out for starting the race too fast! Luckily, I am the keeper of the run/walk ratio watch, so my Teammates will be sure to help hold me back.

I'm spending the evening trying to figure out how to take all the names of the people I'm running in honor and in memory of and get them onto my singlet as I'd promised I would. I found printer ShrinkyDink paper (fun!) and am going to try and do something with that. I just hope it doesn't look too tacky when I'm done.

Kim: Don't worry about how it looks....you know why you are doing it, and so does your team. The heck with the rest!

I think Lisa might be holding off posting today to let me get in first...thanks hun!

Everyone Else: :cheer2: :yay: :flower3:

Today I have 2400 yards on tap in the pool :scared1: Farther than I've ever swam, and on the THIRD day of IM training

I WANT to go back to the couch and watch Family Guy, but I WILL go to the pool...

Mike

Mike, you just took advantage of my day off to beat me to the first post.... puckerup:

Kim, I apply that same principle to snowmobiling. I carry the beer on my sled, therefore, DH has to turn around and find me sometime.....:lmao:

Not much on tap for me today beside cleaning. My cleaning lady is down for the count with a virus so it is all me today. Well, me and the kidlets as they have no school today. Monster storm hitting any time now with 6-10" and slight icing at the end. We will see if DD14 has field hockey tonight...:confused3

Last workout for me today before the half! Ran an easy 2 miler topped off with some stretching.

Tonight's "sport" is packing. Was hoping the weather here would be just bad enough for Northwest to let me change my ticket to go earlier, but no such luck. Plus, I just read about all the new fees they will be charging to redeem frequent flyer miles. Totally outrageous!

Hi Everyone! :wave2:

Thanks for letting me in on the fun here. Did enjoy being part of a team last year - certainly helps to keep me accountable. Patrick will be joining in as well but likely won't post until after we're back from WDW.

As for my 2009 plans:

March 8 -Princess 1/2
March 29 - Shamrock Shuffle, Chicago
April 25 - CMM half
May 31st - Toronto Women's 1/2
June 21 - Metlife Duathlon, Tinley Park, IL
June/July - Danskins Women's Sprint Tri (first one)
Aug 2 - Chicago Rock N Roll 1/2
Sept 6 - VA Beach Rock N Roll 1/2
Nov - Space Coast - may do the full for this one...have to see how WDW full goes....

We'll get in local 5 and 10ks as well. Couple we did last year that we enjoyed. Plus cycling. Looking at 2 half centurys and Patrick is thinking about a full century. :scared:

Looking forward to a good year and getting to know all of you!

Welcome to the Goofs Liz and Patrick! I'm pretty sure I met you folks at the Metlife Duathlon last year...you have quite a year on tap; I'm excited for you about your first tri!!!

Mike

Woohoo Liz and Patrick are here...:woohoo:

For those of you who don't know them, you should. Patrick walked along with ScottH and I during ToT in October. Yes you read that right. He WALKED a 12 mpm average. I still love him though!! He was great entertainment. Patrick will be walking the full alongside me at CMM....right Patrick....

Everyone leaving today, safe travels and HAVE FUN FOR ME TOO!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome Liz and Patrick!! :wave2:

Walked a few miles on Monday, rode the bike a few miles last night...I know you are not supposed to do too much right before a race but I feel like I haven't done enough lately. Oh well, no turning back now. Planning on the expo tomorrow, pick up my daughter early from school on Friday and then check into Pop in the afternoon. Like I've said before, my goal is to FINISH. Doesn't matter the time, doesn't matter how many finish before me...I just want to finish. If I keep saying it maybe I will believe it!

For everyone flying/driving in the next day or so....BE SAFE!

Weather forcast...rain front coming through today around lunch and then clearing out...sunny till Monday with temps in the lower to mid 70's during the day and mid 40's to lower 50's at night.:sunny:

1) Welcome to taper!

2) You will do FINE...I believe you will finish and surprise yourself at how well you do...while I know that unasked for advice is worth what you pay for it...generally nothing...try to hold yourself back pace wise at the start of the race...I have been very conscious of doing this my last 3 races, and I am able to finish MUCH stronger than if I let my excitement about FINALLY starting what i have been training for override what I know I can do.

Good Luck Suzanne, and all the Goofs who are traveling!

Hi Mike - yep that was us at the Duo last year. You doing that one again? And I'm sure to be picking your brain on the tris.

Hi Maura - looking forward to seeing you again on Friday!

Lisa - you are so sweet. And yep, Patrick is all registered for the CMM full and will start training after we get back. Is disgusting he can walk a 12mph.

Suzanne - doing the half or full? This will be my first full and can tell you I'm a bit nervous as well as excited. Mike is right, take it easy out of the start. I blew it my first couple longer distances and although finished did not feel good. My first half in Aug, started slow, gradually picked up to my pace and finished strong and with a smile. I'm sure you'll do great!

Today I am so nervous that I am nauseated. The idea of running even a couple miles seems completely overwhelming and I am supposed to go 39?!

I have to go do something to get my mind off this.

Thanks for the reminder to drink more water! I haven't been doing as well as I should so I will make a more concerted effort today.

Why did I sign up for this?

Cecilia

Welcome to our little party Liz and Patrick. Nice to have some new faces around here!

Well, it's certainly nice to see everyone posting.......I think we are posting more since the challenge ended!!! Pretty interesting.....:scratchin

So, I kept myself on the TM yesterday for 8 miles.......yes, 8 miles. I did get a TV to myself at the gym.......I got lucky, in the first few minutes on, the gentleman beside me got off his TM. He was gone, so I changed the channel. I guess it was only a potty break though......he came back in a few minutes and was MAD! I really didn't think he was coming back, or I wouldn't have changed the channel! Will teach him to potty before getting on! I truly don't feel bad though........NOONE stays on the TM longer than 30-40 minutes but me anyway! I was on the blasted thing for 95 minutes......I deserve the TV, don't I????? It truly did help......without it I wouldn't lasted longer than 60 minutes.

So, since the new year, I have logged 24 miles! Not to shabby!

I hope travels go well for all those going to WDW. Have good races, and be safe!

Beth

Cecilia I figure that you--of all people--will do well on Sat/Sun. Don't asky me how I know this, I just do! I read all your training reports and your posts and see both physical and mental strength. Sometimes I say to myself "If I could run the race as well as Cecilia, I would be happy!"

So ease up on the worrying, because you will come through. And you'll have all of us to help--still want the coffee at mile 11? I can pack the thermos you know--how do you take it?

Maura

Anyone want to join my pity party for those who are unable to attend Disney this weekend?
Boo Hoo Boo Hoo

Okay- done.

Good luck everyone and have a blast for those of us that join you in spirit and cheer for you long distance

Be there in 2010!
