I offer this, without comment, here's the link:

http://snafu-ed.blogspot.com/2007/11/disney-its-large-world-after-all.html

here's the whole article:

Take a look around you anywhere, and you'll see evidence of America's obesity problem. Just a look at people's waistlines will show you just how many more obese people there are. And it's not limited to America, either.

Well, Disneyland has had to face facts as well, and the unfortunate habit of boats on the "It's a Small World" ride to run aground means that the ride will be forced to close in January for necessary upgrades.

While publicly Disney says the reason for the fixes centers around layers of fiberglass patches in the waterway, all you have to do is watch the ride to see the "magnitude" of the problem. Employees currently eye riders and leave empty rows in some boats to prevent hang-ups, but even with that the boats still run aground.

So the waterway will be deepened, and boats that ride a little higher in the water will be added to the ride. What to do until the ride is fixed? Wait, isn't that a food stand?

So they're only half loading the Small World boats because they're bottoming out due to excessive guest weight?!? Yikes!! What floated 'em in the early 70's sinks 'em 30 some odd years later. If that isn't a wake-up call, I don't know what is!

Wonder how long it will take for someone to file suit because they were embarrassed when the CMs only half loaded their boat?

They'd better hurry if they're going to file suit on this basis.. the ride's only open thru early January at Disneyland. :)

If this is a pool, I'll take day 42.

lustergirl --- the parks should not have to do this - this is my point, if you are to large, then dont ride ...

To be clear.. it's NOT that individuals exceed the weight limit on the boat..

Its that EVERYONE is 5-15lbs heavier (on average) than 30 years ago.

What's forgotten tho - is that (on average) people are also taller and in many cases have more muscle mass than they did 30 years ago too...

And also lost in all this, is that the 'canal' that the boats travel in, is the original from the 1964 World's Fair presentation of IASW. It's old, it has many leaks, it's rusting and it MUST be replaced. .. SEPARATELY from the boats issue. Replacing the boats with a different design could fix the problem if the canal was "ok" -- it's not.

The media loves to report on stuff like this and give it 'one reason' to blame. The truth is never that simplistic. As you can see above there are a multitude of reasons cascading to create this extended rehab.

Again - to be clear - this is DisneyLAND and the IASW at WDW was refurbed a couple of years ago and is NOT closing in 2008 for extended refurb.

Get a grip! Read the real reasons before you go pointing fingers. It isn't just the fact some fat people wanted to ride the ride.

And "to" in that case is spelled "TOO". And "dont" has an ' and the first letter of a sentence should start with a capital letter. How do you like it when someone is critical of you for no good reason out of the blue?

My god, people are judgmental on this board!

And stick a fork in this one... we're done here.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the DIS Posting Guidelines.. in particular..

# 3. NO FIGHTING/SARCASM: While we'd like to think that a Disney fan site is always lighthearted, there are times when there are disagreements. Let's face it, there are certain topics that can transform any of us into a raging "Donald Duck." When you sense this is happening, we ask that you step away from the discussion before it escalates into a fight. Just like Mom always said about fighting, we don't care who started the argument and we don't want it on the DIS. (Okay, she didn't say the part about the DIS, but you know what we mean.) No attacking others and no sarcasm please. Either will result in an infraction.
