It's a Great Big Beautiful Trip Report

Just checking in. SO glad you are in Disneyland as we speak. You know how to VACATION :thumbsup2 I will keep checking in. I can not wait to hear more.:goodvibes

Disneyland, too? I am jealous!! I'll just have to continue to live vicariously through you.

BTW, Chuck wants to take an extra weekend trip this summer for his birthday! Do you think we can survive four trips in one year?:cool1:

I've been hearing that four is the new three! I love the idea of the birthday trip. Can he be there for his actual birthday, or is he about to turn into a birthday fibber?

Thanks, flafan! I had a great time at Disneyland despite the rather challenging weather. It was fun to check out all the differences and I especially enjoyed meeting up with a DIS friend.

Day 7 - Back on Safari Again!

At long last I am back to September and my day at the Animal Kingdom. To reset the scene, I had won a dream Fastpass getting off KS and had celebrated with a warm pretzel before going back to visit the savannah again.

It was a quick walk down through the queue. I boarded my safari vehicle, again requesting and getting the front row left side. I waved my ginormous telephoto lens at the CM by way of explanation. We set off on our bumpy way to animal adventures. I like that there is a story about being on safari as well as the actual animals and their stories.

The giraffe cruised in a loosely clustered group, eating up the distance with their stilt legs. Two of the female elephants were having their early morning munch. No baby elephants yet, but I would be around once more before going on to Asia.

Since I had one more fastpass to Safari, I could afford the time to walk the Pangani Forest Trail before returning to Harambe for another expedition. The best gorilla viewing was actually just at the exit to the Safari rather than in the beautiful walk past the hanging bridge through the main habitat area.

Whereas at other times of year there have been many meerkats out and about, this time the sentry was the lone representative.

"Is this my good side?"

There was riotous fantastic nest building going on in the Tavata Golden Weaver bird zone. They were all totally focused on building grassy aerial dwellings. Each one was different but built with major concentration and artistry. I stayed for quite a while, watching the housing boom, and then proceeded along the rest of the trail.

DSC_0122-2.jpg

I used my last Fastpass to get on KS for one last trip. The residents of the Savannah did go to ground or shade pretty quickly as the day wore on. The giraffe (except for one baby) were all standing amidst a roughly circular cluster of tall trees, their necks echoing the tree trunks. The two young elephants were hanging out together as their mothers and aunts had been doing earlier. Most of the hoof stock were laying low as were the cats.

Then it was time to make my way back to Asia and a date with the Yeti. I was hungry for a little something, and it was extremely steamy, so I had an ice cream break with a soft serve vanilla/chocolate swirl cone. There were some minor challenges with the heat and rapidity of melting of my treat, but my napkin supply was adequate to the challenge. I watched the trains hurtle down the mountain and took some pictures of the Yeti figures.

When I was done with snack time the EE standby wait was only 15 minutes so I went through that way to experience the queue once again. I waited for the first row as I have become an EE snob as well as a SM snob. The lucky single rider who got to come with me in the first row was taking her very first ride on the mountain. It was extra fun to see someone discover the ride, and particularly because she didn’t know anything about the broken track/backwards section. I used my Fastpass and rode again in the first row then trekked off to Dinoland and Dinosaur, taking pictures along the way.

When I got to the entrance of Dinosaur I went through the Fastpass queue as the stand by wait was listed as 20 minutes. I walked right through the queue all the way up to the CM at the gate just before the movie rooms and as there was no one else in sight he just waved me through and told me to keep the Fastpass for later. I love the little movie, especially the bit about the future being in the past. I appreciated the ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard tubes and the pseudo scientific flux ducts before boarding my time machine to careen around the Cretaceous forest. I went right back around again and the new CM at the gate took my fast pass this time. I hardly noticed because there were three Dream Squad CMs standing in the hallway by the entrance to the movie rooms. They just stood inscrutably as I went on to participate in yet another successful mission to import a dinosaur through time. Of course I started immediately back into the queue. Only one Dream CM was at the gate this time. Another ride, another close call.

When I didn’t see the other two Dream bestowers at the exit, I went back in again. The gate CM had us wait for a moment, then let five people into the left side theater and I was held at the rope. It seemed like I had just missed whatever it was that was about to happen. The Dream Squad leader went into the theater, came back out, went in again then came back, then went back in. I couldn’t believe that something cool might be happening and I would never know what it was. He reappeared suddenly and opened the gate and sent us into the left theater.

We filed in and found that the other two Dream Teamers were at the exit door to the ride queue. We all watched the movie together and then when the movie ended and the doors opened they made their “Right place, right time” speech and told us we had all won dream lanyards and pins. Woo hoo! A new dream for my collection! We all received a lovely blue lanyard emblazoned with “Year of a Million Dreams” in silver, with two pins with the same logo featuring Mickey and Minnie on one and Daffy and Goofy on the other.

I rode a final triumphal time and then headed over to Discovery Island sporting my new lanyard. I had seen incredible pictures of the seating areas of the Flame Tree Barbecue on the DIS so I wanted to check it out. It was more beautiful and cool that I could have imagined. I indulged in some ribs with sides of cornbread and baked beans and had the Skinnies come out and play in the pool (of course Pluto was more interested in my lunch). The ribs were excellent - tangy, tender and meaty. The cornbread was ordinary but I love cornbread in all its guises so I enjoyed it thoroughly. Ditto for the baked beans.

When I finished eating I explored the enchanted garden. Scattered in the garden on many different levels are magical colorful pavilions with lanterns in the trees, each area themed with paintings, lanterns and carvings of different predator-prey relationships. There is a beautiful lily pond with sweet animal sculptures and there is a sensational view of Everest across the water.

It was super extremely hot by then so I decided it was time to hobble back to the entrance to the park, pausing for a photopass session draped with all my Dream stuff.

I took the tram and luxuriated in sitting down for the ride to the parking lot. I drove home to the Poly and iced my feet then went out to my favorite hammock on the beach for aaaah time. The skies had been darkening with distant thunder for a while and after I’d been out there for an hour or so it finally started to sprinkle. I retreated to the Great Ceremonial House promptly at that point after my recent experiences of sky opening downpours commencing without warning and had my Halloween party photos added to my regular photopass while I was there.

I decided it was near enough time for dinner to get ready to head back to the Animal Kingdom zone for my ADR at Boma. I went back to my room, taking some pictures along the way.

Yeah! You're back -- you know we love your TR! So very cool and congrats on going back to get your Disney Dream!!

The Flame Tree BBQ is a great little hideaway! Makes you feel like you're not even in a theme park.

Can't wait to hear about Boma!

:woohoo:

Woohoo! She's back, and better than ever! Such beautiful photos, and such beautiful writing! I'm so glad you went out and amassed so much great material this winter. I hope you'll have plenty of time and inspiration to write it for us!

Hi Marshay!
I felt a little bit like a Dream Squad Stalker but it was fun to chase the Dream!
I can't believe I didn't know about the terraced Flame Tree seating before this. It's such a respite from the park, as you say, and full of great details.

Hi LL!!!

I love the Tibetan Prayer flags and the great framing they provide for pictures in Asia. It is one of the details that reinforces the story, and I like the beautiful spiritual mission of the flags.

You are going to have to plan a trip to Disneyland! I kept thinking of you while I was there because the lamp situation was amazing!

Tibetan Prayer flags, I knew they had a name. I just couldn't put my finger on it.

Oh, I have a trip to Disneyland in the back of my mind. I am hoping in a few years to get out there. :thumbsup2

Simply amazing photos! I feel like I got to go to AK just for a little while this evening. Emily loved the elephant picture. If it is okay with you, can I add it to our computer slideshow? I love how you captured the little details. That is my favorite thing about AK! And the Dream stuff: SCORE!!!!

Hi Lynn!!
Feel free to nab any photos any time! I'm so glad you're enjoying them.
I loved the YOMD. It was super fun to have that potential Dream around every corner. I had special fun in January and February because a few dreams came true even after the official ending of the promotion. More on that later...

Hi Circusgirl!

I'm so psyched you are on again! I've got your TR bookmarked and check everyday to see if there is more fodder for my perusal :) Hooray, today there is!!! Beautiful pictures, beautiful writing!

Flame Tree was one of our favorite meals in all the parks. You just can't beat the tranquility of the setting, and the sheer tastiness of the victuals.

Looking forward to all your adventures this winter- especially your DL trip. I'll always have a soft spot for it.

Thanks for the warm welcome! It's great to be back.
I'm really happy I made the DL trip. I hadn't been there in a long time and it does have charms that are all its own. Because we had cold and rainy weather, the crowds stayed relatively low which let me have lots of ride time with minimal waits. And now I get to justify going back for some better weather on another trip! :thumbsup2

Day 7 - Feasting, Fireworks and Festivities

I was extra super happy about my DDE card’s free valet parking perk when I arrived at the Animal Kingdom Lodge in the pouring rain.
There’s nothing like Princess parking to set the right tone for an evening especially if it prevents a slog through the elements.

I breezed out of my car and into the lobby. I hope that the collaboration that brought this fantastic space to life was fun and fruitful for the participants. The results are certainly spectacular. There are so many different elements and levels to this impressive yet comforting space. The colorful and organic forms of the chandeliers, the little nooks and crannies with comfy chairs and fireplaces, the soaring bridge high above the activity in the lobby and the art works all anchor this vast rush of a place. The materials and colors are rich and textured and the overall feeling is of nature and hearth together. I want to stay here for a few days during a longer trip and just hang at the hotel.

I walked down the stairs through the lounge and emerged into the busy Boma greeting area. I’ve never been through this area when it wasn’t busy and tonight was no exception. I was prepared for a longish wait but was pleasantly surprised by a quick entry into food city. I had a nice two-top looking out toward the landscaping around the pool. Really the only problem with Boma is that I cannot do this huge buffet justice despite how hungry I am when I arrive. This time I tried to take tiny tastes of many many things but even so I felt I neglected some of the food items.

The soups were especially good. Fish stew and curried chicken were rich and flavorful. I took small servings of many things like avocado papaya salad, couscous, bread, lentils, potatoes, rice and the obligatory mac and cheese. The carving station had prime rib and grilled salmon and there was succulent roasted chicken. This is the only time I have ever wished I were a 17 year old boy, so I could have the appetite to go with the sumptuousity of the buffet.

My server was exceptional and I enjoyed chatting with her a few times during the meal. It is mildly to moderately frenetic here and I missed Jiko’s serenity, but enjoyed the many choices and interesting salads as well as the classic buffet salmon and carved meats.

Of course dessert had to receive its due. All the chocolate things were excellent and the lemon bar was the perfect combination of tart and sweet and creamy with a mild crunch to the pastry. The zebra dome was not my favorite, although it won best looking. The little strawberry tartlet had delightfully flaky pastry and the apple crumble and bread pudding represented hearty dessert goodness.

Utterly full, I poked through the gift shop for a little while and then headed back out to the portico where the valet retrieved my car. The rain had subsided which cleared the way for my hopeful plan to watch Wishes and the EWP from the beach back at the Poly. I was early enough to stop in the Tambu Lounge to enjoy a set of Hawaiian tunes from Kaleo. (One of the most disappointing things about the current round of entertainment cuts is that Kaleo was let go after many years of creating a warm happy trip to the Islands for people in the lounge. Now that he’s gone it is a loud crowded waiting space where once it was a great refuge at the end of the day.)

Around a half an hour before Wishes was due to start I headed out to the beach, stopping by the pool to grab some towels as all the seating was sure to be damp. I scored my favorite hammock and settled in to relax while looking across the water to the castle, watching the little resort boats come and go. More and more people arrived as fireworks time drew near, and I was glad I had arrived early enough for a hammock to call my own.

Then the voice of Jiminy Cricket came over the beach sound system and the build to the show started. I am utterly sentimental about this show. Girlbomb wrote a beautiful description of this inspiring and hopeful experience so I won’t even try to do it more justice here. You can read perfection in her trip report at:
http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=29968745&postcount=132

As Wishes was ending, the boats of the EWP were queuing up along the beach. Where Wishes is show craftsmanship of the first order, the EWP is totally corny. I love it for that, and knowing that people have been watching the sea creatures, King Neptune and all the rest sparkle to the bleating mechanical soundtrack for many years. After the EWP darkened and chugged off to the next resort I uncurled from my swinging nest to move on to my next activity. I returned my towels and stopped by my room for a jacket as it was now sprinkling and almost chilly.

I have had Yehaa Bob at Port Orleans Riverside on my must see list for several trips (of course having read about him on the DIS) and tonight was the night I was going to check out what the fuss was about. I also had never been to POR so was looking forward to seeing the resort.

As soon I walked into the lobby of the POR I heard a raucous jolly huge noise coming from somewhere beyond the check in area. Of course it was Yehaa Bob and his utterly appreciative and participatory audience. My first though was that I couldn’t believe how many shows a week he does with the amount of physical energy he was putting out. He is a no holds barred entertainer and his audience rocks right along with him. It’s a breakneck routine in which he totally connects with his audience while singing, doing acrobatics around his piano and emitting ultra high level energy. I watched for quite a while and then took a break to go check out the rest of the resort.

The resort gift shop is very large, well-stocked and has a nice little grocery area. I wandered around for a little while outside and admired the setting and then found another spot at the back of the packed room where Yehaa Bob held forth and watched until his break. By then I was starting to feel the effects of a long fun filled day and was ready to head home.

Arriving back at the Poly, I appreciated the resort loop music as I strolled back to my room. I want my regular world to have a soundtrack too and would prefer it if atmosphere establishing music would emanate from every rock, bush and lamppost like it does here.

Back in my room I downloaded photos and stretched before getting ready for bed. I had to look around to find my toothbrush tonight. The Mousekeeper had set it in the towel pooch. I hadn’t realized he was a working dog.

DSC_0322-3.jpg

Even though I was tired and technically all ready for bed I didn’t want to go to sleep because I didn’t want to miss a moment of anything. No catching up on sleep for me here! It’s all about the other side of rejuvenation with energy, creativity and inspiration.

Yay, an update! What a lovel surprise after losing my hour of sleep last night! Your descriptions are wonderful. I do agree that life would be better if the world had a soundtrack like WDW, but I do dance to the music in my head, don't you? Boma looked great. I wish I was going there tonight.

Your Boma food pictures are excellent! :thumbsup2

I think having a soundtrack would greatly improve my life. I wonder if I could get music coming out of my stapler at work. ;)

The Poly Beach is so great and so relaxing. :cloud9:

I dance internally too! There is so much great dance music in the air at the Magic Kingdom that I have even been known to grab a cast member and waltz.

The beach at the Poly with the view of the other resorts and the Magic Kingdom is one of the things that keeps me going back there even though there are many other resorts on my must-try list!

The musical stapler idea is perfect! :rotfl: :rotfl:

Girlbomb wrote a beautiful description...

Aw, stop! And right back at you - you write beautiful descriptions. Great update -- I especially love your itineraries; you really know how to both pack it in, and relax. I'm so psyched that we'll be seeing each other, along with several notable others, in Sept.!
