iTouch vs Dsi

Thanks everyone - keep weighing in! I am having this exact debate for DD9. I'm also considering getting her a laptop. We live in Microsoft land and literally 80% of the kids in her class have all these things already. We're not trying to keep up with the Jones' in principle but we do feel some pressure for our kids to be very tech-saavy in this tech saavy world.

For the record - we have ONE TV in our house. And no cable.

: ) DS8 has mentioned wanting a laptop. It will be many moons before that will happens . He can use our desktop or nothing until he is much much much older. My DS21 bought his own lap top at 17 .

DS8 can learn to be tech savy on his parents computer , actually not learn I guess, he already knows , drives me crazy that sometimes I have to ask him a question about it HAHA.

Correction. We used to not have cable but then had to get it to get like 12 channels. So I guess we do have "basic cable."

Thanks everyone - keep weighing in!

This one still has me baffled -- and before I speak, this is not directed at OP or anyone in particular on this thread...

Again, I wholeheartedly disagree with buying any preschooler their own "dedicated" piece of equipment (that is primarily geared to tweens-adults, to begin-with) that costs close to $200 -- for many, that's a serious amount of money that could be better-used paying a utility bill, or something more worthwhile.

Now, if the preschooler truly has the intelligence/know-how to use such a device, I am not totally beyond the idea of buying one for the family and sharing it with the little one.

IMO, today's children are being taught "instant gratification" at an early age. And I think a lot of parents do it as some sort of an "apology" for not being there in some other way (busy w/professional life, etc.).

And, many times, it's these same people who spend their way into a massive amount of debt and/or lose their job and can't take that fourth WDW trip for the year -- and subsequently come on the budget board under an assumed name and pick our brains on how to make that #4 trip in spite of their lack of funds.

I'm just sayin'...

When I asked people to weigh in it was more along the lines of exploring the differences between the two products. That was just what I personally was looking for.

My DD is nearly 10 and not a preschooler. I am a SAHM and have spent her whole life with her raising her myself personally, along with my DH who is also very hands-on. We are not overscheduled. We got to Disney once per year - so I don't have a need to "apologize" for going less often by buying her an electronic device. What a patronizing and ridiculous insinuation! Our only debt is a partially paid off mortgage on a 30 year old 1800 sq foot house, thankyouverymuch.

Not that I need to answer to anyone here.

I am not at all tech-saavy (like I said we own one TV and one computer and they are both very old) and was just looking for a little advice and insight about these two products.

I do understand that some people feel 6 is too young for the iTouch and that is one of the reasons I wanted everyone's opinion. As far as the budget goes, if we buy the iTouch, I would be using my Staples rewards $ and probably have to pay next to nothing out of pocket, just like I did for my 13 yo last year. Thanks for all of the opinions-keep them coming!

We all get that you are JUST SAYIN, we also all get that you are being very judgemental : ).

This is a budget board, but just because it is about budgets doesn't specify whose budget and how much that budget is. The people on this board are from all walks of life. All of us enjoy getting a good deal ,which is why lots of us are here, others might need real help with their budgets.
