itemized receipts?

Please refresh my memory ... Are the receipts at table service restaurants itemized? Or just a grand total of what you owe? In the past it's just been DH, myself and the kids - no need to divi the check. This time we are going as 3 separate family groups and figured if we only get 1 check, one person could pay then we'd be able to figure out what we each owe and settle up at a later time.

I'm pretty sure they are itemized. We just got back from October trip, so I pulled out receipts and I have the credit card receipt. That receipt isn't itemized, but I believe the original bill was. I remember looking specifically at one when we were at Mama Melroses.

You are given a detailed, itemized, bill prior to making payment. When you make payment (especially if by credit card) you should receive both a copy of the CC receipt as well as being able to keep the itemized bill.

It most restaurants, it is best to let them know before ordering if you need seperate checks! They will be happy to provide them, but as a former server, it is easier to know in advance...

Thank you everyone for all your replies. My brain has officially kicked into over-planning mode and I find myself thinking about the simplest things.
