My DD wants a princess dress when we visit the parks this summer. The problems are 1. She wears an adult medium and 2. Her favorite princesses are Pocahontas and Mulan.

Any places to start?

They have a bunch of custom made costumes, some are on the very expensive side but are amazing. And there are a ton of lower priced ones too!

My brother sent my DD a beautiful traditional dress from China for her birthday. It happens to be in similar colours to Mulan's dress and it's in a lovely, soft silk fabric. She calls it her Mulan dress and I'm sure that if I took a good look at the details of Mulan's costume I could add a sash or something and get it to look just like the costume. Perhaps you live close enough to a Chinatown area where you could get a similar dress, or even have one made?

Unfortunately we are no where close to a Chinatown. I've been checking etsy.

Try something like a costume store online. There are lots of different princess dresses on those in tons of different sizes.

I have a similar problem. My daughter is going to BBB this July and she is a size 12 to 14. I have done EXTENSIVE research and online shopping to find a dress for her. What I have discovered is unless I have it hand made for a ridiculous amount of money I am going to have to wait until we get to the park. The biggest size sold through Disney (not on property) is a size 10/12 but at the park they have an XL which is a 14/16.

A Pocahontas costume would be easy peasy to make - toss me a couple yards of soft brown fabric and I could make one, stat!

Costume stores have sales this time of year (online) and a women's costume might do. You could take it in here and there - if the bust darts were too much, for example.

When I have a child that complains their costume is 'itchy', I have them put it on and identify the areas. Then I take long strips of white felt (about an inch wide) and tack it (sew) over the itchy areas. Works a dream!

I don't know that you will find bigger sizes at Disney. It is rare to see dresses over 10/12. Dresses are more commonly found 7/8 and smaller.

As far as Etsy, I see nice dresses on Etsy all the time and comparable pricewise to those made by Disney.

What princess dress is she wanting? I can check when I'm at MK later this week and let you know if they have it.

My daughter has sensory problems and won't wear most costumes because of the fabric (other than her Elsa dress.)
I purchase "aprons" off of Etsy. That way she can wear it over whatever she wants, but still has the costume on. It also allows her to wear them for a long time because I can make them bigger. The best (and most expensive) ones we've purchased came from the seller Ross and Rosie.

Etsy, for certain.

I bought a cute knock off dress for Belle from Amazon because it had this amazing hoop slip, but Etsy will work with you for size and fit and fabric choices so it's not itchy and comfortable. Yes, you will pay more for custom fit, but, it will look amazing, and feel utterly comfortable on.

as far as the itchy factor i would recommend layers. a tank under the dress on the top and legging short on the bottom. This will also be helpful if she decides half way through the day she doesn't want to wear it anymore :goodvibes

For my older DD, we went with princess-inspired outfit. She wanted "Ariel-like" so we ended up with a aqua blue tank and a long purple skirt. She was happy. I had also found some pretty summer dresses at Sears that could have worked too.

What about seeing if you can find a kimono in Mulan colors?

Check out some disney bounding blogs/websites: http://www.collegefashion.net/inspiration/fashion-inspiration-walt-disneys-mulan/

It all depends on what will make your DD feel like a princess. I was prepared to buy my DD a dress from Sears but we ended up putting the pieces together based on what she had in her closet and she was happy (And so was my wallet).
