Italy Experts Needed!

We will be in Italy for Spring Break. Rome and Venice. We will fly home on Easter Sunday. This is probably a silly question...but do they sell Easter Candy in Italy? Like big chocolate rabbits, small jelly bean eggs, etc? Does the Easter Bunny come to Italian children?

We are living in the Middle East and they do sell a small amount of Easter Candy here, so I could buy it and attempt to take it with me, but if I can get it there it would be so much better!

Thanks for your help!
Katy

I can't say for sure that they sell Easter candy but i'm pretty sure they do. They also have some fun candy that would be good for a Easter basket. When we went my boys got chocolate (it was either a ball or egg i'm not sure) that was hollow and had as little toy in it. My boys thought it was very cool.

Easter is HUGE holiday. I was in Sicily for Easter a few years ago, so it might be different in the north, but there was loads of candy. Not Cadbury creme eggs or anything, but lots of marzipan in different shapes. I don't remember chocolate bunnies, but Italians love chocolate, so I bet you can find something you'll like. Pastries are a big thing too. That was my favorite part. If you see anything with the tiny wild stawberries, get it. They're amazing!

Katy Belle,
Good timing - I was in Rome all last week, and just got back today. And I can tell you that the candy stores are already geared up for Easter. The assortment may be different from what you would find in the U.S., but the Italians are very good when it comes to anything sweet.

And although the Easter Bunny isn't part of Italian tradition, never underestimate the impact of the U.S. when it comes to popular culture. You can easily pick up a chocolate rabbit or two (or three ...)

Great! Thank you so much!

Do they sell the candy in supermarkets or just specialty shops?

I really appreciate your help. It sounds like the selection there is much better than here. Easter isnt a big holiday in this country.

Katy

Yep yep yep - we visited my cousin a couple times around Easter and never had a shortage. The big thing there are the big Kinder eggs (and other brands - I think some were Nestle) They're giant chocolate eggs with toys or surprises inside then wrapped in foil tissue. We brought a couple home as carry-ones one year for my lil cousins here - that was interesting! I've seen them on occasion here - but usually specialty stores.

Easter isn't a big holiday in Qatar? What is this world coming to!

Not to worry, you'll come across lots of Easter candy just walking around Rome and Venice. The specialty stores would be your best bet, both for convenience and for variety. I doubt you'll come across a supermarket in the tourist-frequented area of either city, since supermarkets in Italy tend to be stuck out in the 'burbs, or along the main roads leading downtown. (The grocery stores downtown are usually fairly small.) And if you do drive out to a supermarket, you would find that their selection of Easter eggs and other seasonal candy is relatively small, compared to the specialty stores.

I have absolutely nothing to add to this except to say have a great time. You're living my dream!!
