It Never Ends

It is so sad, breaks my heart, to target the police, then take their weapons. Then the cowards take their own life. Love to the families.

Just 2 more members of our well regulated militia. Think we need to do a better job at the "well regulated" part???

I agree with you.

I just took a CPL (concealed permit license) class in April, got my certification and I am now legal to carry a concealed pistol, which I do sometimes. DH has had his for years and his sisters decided they wanted to take the class so I took it with them and our daughter as well.

Our instructor was a police chief. He even told us when he stops someone if they hand over their CPL along with their driver's license he knows he hasn't stopped some crazy person with a gun. You have to go through a background check and you can't have felonies, mental issues, etc. in order to get your CPL.

I mostly "carry" when I'm up north as we do have wild animals up there and I want to protect myself when I go hiking. But I have carried at home too, even into stores. No one knows, it's concealed. You'd probably be surprised at how many regular citizens conceal nowdays.

And it's not the ones with the licenses you have to worry about. It's the nut cases like the ones we're just hearing about from Las Vegas. :(

I''d be willing to bet that there are more than a few people who have their CPL that have mental issues that have developed after they got that. Geez, to think that everyone that has the license is never going to turn into a nut is niave to say the least. What about the guy who shot the other guy in a movie theater because he wouldn't be quiet. He had his gun legally and had NO mental issues (according to the law).

And seriously. people are allowed to carry a rifle on their back in Texas? Not that I wanted to but now I will NEVER go there. How crazy is that???

I personally know someone who is on SSDI for mental illness and anxiety issues and he legally owns a guns. It really makes you wonder, doesn't it?

My ex husband applied for and was granted a CPL even though I had taken out a restraining order against him after he threatened to "blow me away" after I left him.

If he has been declared unfit by a state judge, he would not be legally permitted to own a gun. But, until that happens, he's just like everyone else as far as the law is concerned. You're not really suggesting we bypass due process, are you?

Lots of people with driver's licenses are terrible drivers too. You can only regulate so much.

As for the rifles, I would be willing to bet they are more commonplace in rural NW Canada than in say Austin ;)

Well, I agree that nobody needs a beer either, but if you leave your beer lying around, it's unlikely anyone is going to use it to kill you or someone else.

Isn't it illegal to have a gun in Chicago? I guess that didn't work...

Actually, the Supreme Court recently overruled that statute, which was handguns only IIRC. But yes, it was pretty ineffective to say the least.

No. It isn't. The problem in Chicago neighborhoods is that everyone is armed. And guns are the way they solve problems. Don't like someone, shoot them. Then friends and family retaliate. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter…someone "insults" someone in your 'crew' and everyone comes out shooting.

I am not entering a gun debate. But I will say, when it's YOUR friend lying dead because some crazy LEGALLY obtained a weapon and went on a killing spree, when you get that call, your entire perspective changes.

There are about 700 accidental firearms deaths in the US each year. Too many, I would agree. Then again, there are over 3,500 accidental drownings. There are also some 5,000+ alcohol-related deaths a year just in the under 21 crowd.

But why do we only talk about accidental firearms deaths? Are deaths where someone intended to kill someone with a gun any better?

If I was a nut case, I wouldn't go near anyone with a long gun over their shoulder.

Definitely not. But, most of those also don't involve a gun left laying around, which is what I was responding to.

Of course, we should probably do a better job of categorizing homicides and our approach. You have 4 basic categories:

1. Criminals & nuts killing innocents
2. Criminals killing other criminals
3. Criminals & nuts killed by their intended victims or bystanders
4. Criminals & nuts killed by police

#1 should be the top priority even it it accounts for about 1/3 of the body count. Probably the most difficult to solve.
#2 is probably the next one to target.

I don't really have an issue with #'s 3 & 4.

People who are pro gun will argue anything.. A beer, a pool anything.. I get it. You want to argue for your rights... I am not American, but i DO THINK those should be re evaluated.. Those were meant for centuries ago, not today..

In 2004, after ten years of owning our family business, I was the victim of an armed robbery.. 2:30pm it was... My husband had just left with my young children.. I thank God for this EVERY DAY.....

They were caught later on.. Both guns were loaded.. I gave them the money obviously, my life was worth more to me.. However, we sold the business months later, for virtually a song. I remain, to this day, terrified of guns, ski masks, tattoos on necks.. I was 34 years old, and all that went through my head was my babies had left minutes earlier, and they may have been killed for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Until you have been the victim of this time of crime, you really don't know how it feels, you can have compassion all you want, talk all you want, but you HAVE NO CLUE what it is like.. We lost everything, and boy let me tell you we had a fabulous business. Two young drug addicted youths took that away.. I tried for months, I couldn't do it.. I saw them, we had no option.. Had I had a gun (NEVER WOULD I) I would have never had the time to pull it out.. And perhaps my innocent customers would have been caught in the middle of all this.. I did seek some therapy, it did nothing..

My heart goes out to all these victims.. It breaks my heart, and I often have to stop reading...

I'm sorry you went through that, but I really think it only proves the point that you cannot disarm criminals.
