With Black Friday looming I thought it was finally time to start the hunt for a new stove. My current relic is a GE from, are you ready, 1976. The door doesn't shut right, the burner coils keep falling out, some of the indicator lights are gone...I could go on all day.

So, who has purchased a stove recently? I am looking for a basic model that literally only cooks. I am not a chef or a baker and don't pretend to be one, but with 3 kids I do need a stove. Has to be budget friendly. Is there such a thing?

Wow, that is an impressively old stove!! I like Kenmore from Sears. I have had 3 of them in various houses & never had an issue with any of them. They have a variety of styles for any budget.

If you get a flat top, I like a speckled top better than plain black. I did not consider that when we bought the one for this house and plain black is hard to keep looking clean.

I agree with this. My DSis & I both have the speckled top & our DM has the black top. Ours are easy to clean & Mom's always looks dirty no matter how you scrub it. I do love the flat top though. No more dirty drip pans! :thumbsup2

Whirlpool and GE typically make the best 'stripped down' appliances.

Typically because those two companies do a lot of contracting work for new developments apartment complexes etc etc

I know this because I used to work at Sears.

You can also get good Kenmore appliances - often for a better price - that are still MADE by Whirlpool or GE.

We bought a Kenmore Elite 5 burner Dual Fuel (Gas burners - Electric Oven) and it is INCREDIBLE! WE LOVE IT!

I have a flat top stove and I don't like it. I think it is because I was used to a gas stove and when we bought this house, the flat top electric was in it. It is a better stove than my old gas one so I didn't want to swap it out.

I can't wait until I can get a new gas one again. I love gas stoves!!!

Are you definately getting a new electric one?

I have a Kenmore and love it! We bought it 2 yrs ago. I was fine w/ the plain stainless one that was around $500, DH insisted that we get a fancy one. Self cleaning oven (which I am glad we have), convection oven, etc. I have no idea how to use the fancy features, lol. But I do love that the middle burner grate can be removed and replaced with the griddle plate. We got a great deal on Black Friday.
