This happened to us at VWL. We checked in at 11:30 p.m and were told that they had some kind of a problem with our studio and upgraded us to a one bedroom for all of our 5 day trip.

We had something similar happen in Sept. We were upgraded from a value studio at BWV to a preferred view 1 bedroom. I was so shocked and suprised. So it does happen.

We had a long weekend girls trip planned once. When we arrived at POFQ they told us they had overbooked and we could have choice of BW or AKL. We chose AKL. It was our lucky day. And like you, we were eternally greatful! My friends who had never visited WDW before truly believed in Pixie Dust from that moment on.

Aren't the 2-BRs just amazing? We stayed in one last year over Spring Break, and just had the best time. I can't wait to stay there again, but we're making the DVC resort rounds!

How does DVC overbook?
I know at hotels sometimes guests do not vacate causing overbooking, but I would think if villas were all booked and someone wanted to stay over, they would be turned away. Would a villa be unavailable due to maintenance issues or what?

We had a similar experience too in Sept/08. We had a cash room @ POFQ & upon check-in, we were asked if we'd like to stay in a studio @ SSR! We were VERY excited - it was awesome! Now we're going back to SSR in Sept/09! Can't wait! This time we're hoping to get a treehouse villa!

Nice upgrade! We haven't stayed in a studio and unless it's dire, we probably won't after being in 1br and 2br respectively. They are wonderful!

I'm guessing they had some room(s) go out of service for maintenance. DVC keeps a certain % ownership in each resort to cover this, but I am sure from time to time unexpected things come up & make more rooms unavailable than planned.

Also, I expect that they may sometimes overbook cash customers, expecting a certain % of cancellations.

Or maybe somebody just messed up?

We checked in on 1/1 and the CM at the desk told me they had been at 100.6% capacity on 12/31. I asked what they did, she said they "walked" some of the reservations and upgraded other. She did say that they don't upgrade "DVC" reservations, just cash.

I am very pleased to hear that a DVC member received such an amazing upgrade! Congratulations!
