Thousands of Iraqi Troops Appear Ready to Surrender

WASHINGTON — As the 48-hour clock continues to wind down on Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, there are signs that thousands of Iraqi troops are planning to surrender to the U.S. and its allies even in the first hours of war, Fox News has learned.

Senior Defense officials say they are seeing reports that in the first few hours of a military conflict, thousands of Saddam's soldiers will wave the white flag.

U.S. Central Command — led by Gen. Tommy Franks — is looking into reports of surrender attempts in the north and the south. Officials say Iraq's Republican Guard units have pulled out of the north - leaving behind conscripts who will likely surrender in large numbers.

Maybe the US military should install some of WDW's Fastpass machines so the surrender line doesn't get too long?

I wouldn't count it out. I was watching a report on it, and while the intelligence says that Iraq has 400,000 troops, about 330,000 are conscripts and poorly, if at all, trained. Apparently they surrendered en masse during the Gulf War knowing how well they would be treated. And there is the realistic expectation that surrenders will come in large groups.

The other 70,000 are the Republican Guard who apparently got the lion's share of the government money, are very well trained and are mainly deployed around Baghdad. These are the guys you worry about - the ones that really know the urban street warfare on their own turf.

I know our troops have been trained in this type of warfare, and I hope that this does go quickly with the fewest possible casualties.

This explains France's reluctance to support the war. They want to maintain the record for fastest surrender in history and they knew Iraq would challenge their supremacy as the world's greatest quitters

That happened last time too. I dont doubt its true the way Saddam treats his people. They are trying to get the heck away from him.
