I'll try to make a long story short.
My best friend who lives in florida has a work visa. He's lived here in the united states for 14 years. Every year he has to renew his work visa. He told me that he gets a form, blah, blah,
and then has to send it in. He told me that it usually takes 3 months to come back with the new one.
Well, that time is passed. He's gotten something in the mail that
says it could take up to 150 days! I don't understand, since the current one expired two days ago. How can they send out the forms and not give them enough time to complete them and send them back?
Basically, my friend can't work right now without his work visa.
He's been with this employer for over 13 years.
He could get fired, lose all his benefits, etc. His driver's license expired, also. He told me he has to renew that every year, as well, now. He can't get it renewed until he gets his new work visa.
He seems to be taking this all in stride, just sitting at home, and taking it easy. We're planning on going with our friend to hawaii next month, but now I'm not so sure.
I guess the answers will come when they're supposed to.
In the meantime, I thought, gosh there has to be others in the same boat, on pins and needles like this.
So if anyone knows someone who's going through the same thing, or has experience with this kind of situation, please share that experience with me.
Thanks!
New Post:
I've since talked to my friend. The information he's gathered indicates that things changed after 9-11. It appears ALL people who will apply for a work visa have to go through a new, more lengthy procedure-which involves more documentation and an interview. My friend had no idea, otherwise he would have sent in his renewal much earlier (the five month timeframe).
So, in the meantime, he sits, waiting, for the "new" branch of the government to contact him.
He's also found out he can take a LOA for 30 days, then use his 4 weeks of vacation time.
