Issues with BWV

so we arrived late for our stay at the BWV, 1 BR SV last Saturday. Room is ready, 2309 I think. Open door, room is freezing, Air on full blast....never a good sign.

We enter, smells moldy... To tired to care. Unpack go to sleep. Next day, kids have asthma issues. Smell is bad.

We call front desk 3X. After 2 hours waiting in room. Guys comes with a spray bottle. Really, your going to fix this with frebreeze? Guy says "this place smells, frebreeze won't fix it". Ya think???

An hour later manager comes. She agrees it smells. Says I will check to see what I can do. 30 min later comes back with 2 rooms on a piece of paper, 3014 and 3002. and says let's go look at these. I'm like, just give us room.

We visit 3014 first. She goes "this room smells worse than your last room" YIKES!!! Go to 3002. It is good. Last room on the right. Next to Attic, which I have no idea what that is.

Switch rooms and she gives us $300. Which I think is fair. Wasted 3 hours. Moving is a pain but and kids will probably recover :) Seriously, DVC handled it well.

I think the concerns are:
-They knew the room smelled (air was on full blast) and they still sent us there.

- why are so many rooms smelly?

The manager said they got a lot of rain last week but seriously, this is Florida and BWV is supposed to be a premium resort. Why aren't they taking care of the place? Or is this a normal Florida thing?

Sorry that you had issues, here are a couple of thoughts.

DVC didn't handle anything, Disney Resorts did unless you contacted Member Satisfaction.

All rooms at WDW can smell especially if the room had not been occupied for awhile and the AC was left off which de-humidifies the room.

$300 bucks was a good deal, we have been in rooms with wet floors, broken refrigerators, missing kitchen drawers, broken dishwasher, broken toilet, at BLT there was a hole in the wall and a hole in the ceiling and we have never been offered $300.

BWV isn't a premium resort, it's a DVC resort with different policies compared to a deluxe resort.

OP, I'm glad the manager was quick to fix the problem for you. Just for future reference, if you run into a problem like that again, physically walk down to the front desk. By calling "the front desk" from your room, you were actually calling a call center that was likely located outside Florida. You'll get a much more immediate response by going to the front desk.

Sorry this happened, OP. I hope you liked 3002, which is actually an upgrade to BW view. And glad that you got $300 to acknowledge that this should not have happened. I am actually surprised to read this. We have stayed at BWV at least 40 times and never had a moldy room.

3002 actually faces the Swan, BW views are odd numbers.

I'm glad that Disney made things right for you. I am concerned there were so many moldy rooms at such a busy time when the resorts are at 100% capacity. I wonder if they were able to accommodate everyone who reserved a 1BR!

Yes it faced the swan dolphin.

We stay at bwv all the time and have never had this problem so we were surprised. Just curious if anyone else had issues and what causes the issues (furnace?),

You are absolutely correct. I think my Christmas "cheer" is affecting me. This would be an upgrade from standard to canal view, not BW view. When OP said "on the right, next to Attic" I pictured 3001.

Keep enjoying the "Christmas Cheer". ;) Merry Christmas!

We've had maybe 12 stays at BWV and encountered two rooms as you've described. The second one resulted in an immediate move but the first was a royal pain with workman in our room far too frequently. There was a serious layer of black, grungy stuff in the A/C filters and I was very sick. Disney responded with a plate a very pretty chocolates close to the end of our weeklong, rather exhausting, visit.

With these experiences and similar on DCL and other Disney resorts, we've come to expect Maintenance men in our unit as a routine part of our stays. We met quiet a few when at Aulani during its Grand Opening, too. Must be a Disney-thing; I don't have these types of problems at Worldmark!

Something else that contributes to mildew and the smell associated with it, is that guests open the door to the balcony and leave it open.

This makes the room sweat. If they are going to use a balcony, everyone needs to close the door.

Or is this a normal Florida thing?

I would put some stock in that. My mom was an excellent housekeeper and my stepdad was/is an excellent house-up-keeper (she got the inside, he got the outside, basically, when they weren't working), and they still had issues like that when living in Miami. They *had to* keep on top of it because my mom had asthma and was very sensitive. With a hotel, people might not be that sensitive and don't know what they are doing wrong, might cause problems, might not even know there's a problem to report. Even if reported, the people who can fix it might not really comprehend. Housekeepers aren't in there long enough to necessarily notice a problem, and might not have the time to report a problem if they noticed it. etc etc etc.

They took care of it beautifully, even if it took a bit of time. I'm impressed.
