Israel have resumed construction of what has been dubbed the "second Berlin Wall" literally days after a World Court in The Hague voted almost without dissent that the wall was illegal. Only the United States dissented from the decision.

Discuss.

Points to ponder:

-- the Berlin Wall was meant to keep people in, the Israeli wall is meant to keep terrorists out.

-- the wall has been effective -- the rate of suicide bombings in Israel has dropped considerably since construction began.

--what other country besides Israel would let its court system tell its armed forces where to build a security fence? just a few weeks ago the Israeli Supreme Court agreed with the Palestinian plaintiffs that a section of the wall, which separated their village from their fields, had to be moved. the IDF will, of course, relocate that portion of the fence.

--one does not have to look too closely at the World Court to realize that these are the same people who equate Zionism with racism, and feel anti-Semitism around the world is really anti-Israel sentiment and therefore justified.

Sorry, but that's the way it is: What the Israelis are doing right now is pure racism and being against Israel's policy doesn't make one an anti-semit.
I guess you also consider people opposed to Bush as anti-american

which is worse -- building a wall to keep terrorists out, or attacking a country other than your own and occupying it to catch terrorists?

and Viking -- do you have any idea of the composition of the popluation of Israel? 6 million inhabitants, 1 million of which are Arabs -- and that does not include the populations of the West Bank aned Gaza. Arabs sit in the Knesset and enjoy full civil rights in Israel.

How is bullding a wall to keep out terrorists racist?

I could accept an argument that it's political -- there's a dispute over who owns the land encompassed by the wall -- but racist? care to explain?

It is my opinion that the people of Israel have the right to protect themselves from the terrorists. And I say "Amen!" to what they're doing! They've found a very effective way to keep their families safer.

newsday

the world court refuses to condemn the suicide bombings that caused the wall tobe built in the first instance.

and dcentity -- I read on anothe rthread that you felt anti Semtic attacks in France increased because of the wall. not true. the increase in attacks on the Jews of France began when Arafat ordered the intifada.

If the Palestinians don't want a wall built, perhaps they should encourage the terrorist leadership of their community to stop sending suicide bombers in to kill innocent Israelis.

The United States. It hasn't happened yet, but of course if the SC were to make such a decision the military would abide by it.

What the Israelis are doing right now is pure racism

What in the world is racist about trying to prevent your citizens from being blown to bits while they wait in line for a pizza or a cup of coffee?

Don't get me wrong, I disagree with many of Israel's policies, but I think they are dead nuts right on this wall.

Sorry, but anti-Zionism IS the new anti-semitism.

And as far as the US abiding by the iCJ's rulings, what about the case brought against US involvement in Nicaragua in 1984.

I find the objection to Israel's security fence ironic, since about 40 other countries have some kind of wall or security fence guarding their borders, including Saudi Arabia.

Perhaps I missed it, but where did anyone mention the U.S. abiding by ICJ rulings?

Wolf!

If people cry anti-semitism in a case like this, it's going to start losing any meaning. It's entirely possible to be against Israel policy and nothing else.

ITA, and I'm certainly not saying that the World Court's decision was based on anti-Semitism, but I still think it was a bad decision.

By the same token, I don't believe that the fact that Israel is building a wall means that they are racist. I believe it means that they want to protect their citizens.

Huh?

The UN and the wprld court have a long history of ...how shall I put it...a double standard. One policy for Israel anda different standard for the rest of the world.

Yes, it's possible to oppose Israeli policy without being anti-semitic -- in fact, if you read Ha'Aretz on a regular basis you'd see editorials by Israelis who oppose the wall.

the world court condemned the wall but not the terrorism that caused it to be built. what does that say about the judges?

Israel is like any other country and has the right to protect its borders and people using whatever means are necessary. Negotiation/diplomacy, strategic and some not-so-strategic responses have not accomplished what this wall has done and that is to reduce the number of suicide bombings and killings.

I don't like this so-called solution, but admittedly, so far, it is working.

I misread your reply to someone asking what other country would let its court system tell its military where to build fences. I thought it alluded to the ICJ.
