My friend's 12-year-old son needs new pants. He has a 20 waist and needs long length. Khaki style are preferable to jeans, as he doesn't really care for the fit of jeans. It seems like the smallest waist size with long length is 29. Any suggestions for something off the rack?

A slim fit or skinny jean would probably fit the best.
If he can find long enough children's sizes they have the button/elastic waist so you can pull the pants real small at waist.
I can see how length would be a problem.

Old Navy carries skinny jeans. Stay away from their loose fit as that would be extra fabric in legs.
The also carry light weight kakhi pantsin their children's uniform section.

My DS has huge thighs so we have the opposite problem.
Good luck.

I'm trying to picture how exactly this boy is structured since a 20" waist is a boys XS slim (sz 5 slim). And how long is long?? My 7yr old is skin and bones and wears a boys 10slim for length and we just use the adjustable waist pants to bring the waist into an acceptable point.

If she orders from lands end, she'd be able to pick the length. We do that for YDD as she needs a slim size in a length they don't offer off the rack. It doesn't cost anymore to have it hemmed to her length either.

Another vote for Lands End - their boys slim khakis are all my kid lives in! (Also, not a jeans wearer...and likes the adjustable waist pants.) But, you usually have to get them online, since the Sears stores which carry the Lands End stuff don't usually stock many/any of the slim ones. Good luck!

I buy my son slims at JC Penney. He's a 16 Slim. I get him jeans as well as dress slacks. I purchased Izod pants for him for choir - they had to be black. There were also khaki Izod pants there as well.

Another option would be to find a uniform store, i.e. for private schools. My son was at a private school for 4 years and we used Flynn and O'Hara. They had pants in every size, shape, and color.

I hate the pants with the elastic to make the waist smaller. He would have to tighten them so much that they would look stupid....and they would be very uncomfortable because so material was gathered.

That sounds really tiny and I have a string bean!

Echo what everyone is saying and at Target they have Shaun White skinny style and they fit pretty well. Always look for the skinny style.

Remember to that the kids don't wear their pants at their waist, it is a bit below so she may not really need a 20 if that is his actual waist size.

I just measured my DS's Shaun Whites and they are 25 inches and that is below his actual waist by a couple inches. and he is 5'1" and if he weighs 82 I'd be thrilled. these are adjustable and gathered in a bit but not all the way around, and no one sees them cause they wear their shirts out or if they are tucked in it is with a belt and tie.
