Is your state cutting programs or raising taxes?

After we got hit with one of the biggest tax hikes ever at the state level it looks like we're due for either big cuts to the counties or another tax hike. They're cutting school funding, healthcare funding and public safety right now.

Massachusetts is cutting programs and cutting revenue sharing with towns and cities.

Our state (Michigan) cut as much as it could cut year after year, then had to raise the taxes a little a year or two because what little income there was from residents still couldn't meet basic services.

Neither. Ours is in pretty good shape right now (could change any time though).

HA - LaraK, I was going to respond BOTH but since we are from the same state & county . . . .

I'm not sure what Mo is doing I havn't heard anything

I have seen the issues with MoDot. The supplies are tripled for all the highway repair.

We are in trouble with our infrastructure.

St. Louis is doing major HWY repair, with one of our major highways closed.

Our State is doing just fine, however our village had to increase taxes by about 20% 13 months ago due to the lower value of a major employer's buildings being worth about a third less (less taxes for them, more taxes in the village)

Cutting all sorts of services, unfortunately. I'd much rather see a tax increase.

How about the other side of the coin? WHO IS getting this money? It would be interesting to look at who is getting this money.

I was trying to look up Missouri programs to try and figure it out. Everybody has their hand out. So I thought this was an interesting article. In the article they are congratulating the person, David Bradley, for getting more money.

NCAF Champions Effort that Doubles LIHEAP and Weatherization Funding
The Community Action Partnership extends its deepest appreciation to National Community Action Foundation executive director David Bradley (left) for his tireless work that resulted in the doubling of increase of Weatherization Assistance funding (to $477 million) and the near-doubling of LIHEAP funds to $5.1 billion as part of the Congressionally-passed Continuing Resolution (CR). President Bush is expected to sign the CR into law this week, and this CR funding will run through early March, 2009.

“But Don,” (you may ask) “Doesn’t a continuing resolution only extend funding at what was it’s existing level? How did David, NCAF, and the advocacy troops get increases, and hefty increases at that?

Well, C-SPAN fanatics, Congress can selectively increase funds in a continuing resolution by identifying such rare, special cases as “anomalies.” Anomalies are coveted by any and all lobbyists for their respective line items and appropriations and they, again, are very, very rare.

All this to say, great work David! Thank you from all of us in the Partnership family.
