Is your dog or cat microchipped?

No, our 14 1/2 year old dog is not microchipped. I guess I never asked about it and her vets never brought it up. :confused3

I nevery really considered it until they mentioned it to me this morning. It's so minimally invasive, nothing like I thought it would be. I thought they had to make an incision to implant it. All they do is inject the chip under the skin.

They also had some kind of special which waives the monthly fee FOREVER! How could I turn that down?

We just adopted a dog through a rescue group and she had just been microchipped. I just had to call the company and give them our contact info.

We got Mabel microchipped when we had her spayed too!!

Bailey was microchipped when we got her from the Animal Rescue League.

Parker got microchipped when I took him to the vet for the first time. The shelter where we got him from is a bare bones operation and does not have the money to microchip the animals before they are adopted.

I think that it is very worthwhile thing to do. ::yes::

(And Blondie, we have the Home Again chip in Parker and we don't have to pay anything monthly. We did have to do an initial registration of some kind - around $20, I think. But nothing since. :confused3 )

We got Ben and Belle chipped the last time they went for their shots. They were offering a special: one time only registration fee ($36 for both dogs, not apiece) and no maintenance fee--ever. It was awesome! I'm so glad we got it done! You never know when it will come in handy--especially with digging beagles!!!

Absolutely yes!

Our humane society has a microchip month where you can get your pet chipped for just $5.

We had Minnie and Sassy chipped last year at our Banfield vet. Like another poster, it was about 40.00 total with no other fees. And they were chipped with 2 differnet types of chips since not all vets can read all chips. Did that make sense?

YUP - got my cats from the SPCA and they chip them there. We filled out the form for the compnay, as the official owners of the boys. No monthly fee for us either. (Since they are almost identical, I asked them to put a collar on one of them until we got to know them!)

I had them do it when I took my puppy in to get spayed. That was about a month ago and I still haven't sent the payment in to activate it. I'm horrible.

It does make sense. ::yes:: So the price that you paid was really good since I paid $40 for just one chip! :)

Harley was chipped at a dog fair by the humane society - his is through Avid.

Winston was chipped before leaving the shelter when we adopted him - also through Avid.

Lucy was done by the foster mom when she was pulled from the shelter - hers is through Home Again, I believe.

Both of my kitties were chipped after one spent a lovely week roaming the neighborhood. The local animal shelter said that without a chip, strays are adopted or destroyed, so as soon as he was found, they were both chipped. Also, if we ever move to England, they need to be chipped, so it was a "might as well" thing.

Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention or missed something (it was 7 in the AM afterall, and I had no caffeine in me!) but I thought she said there was a $17.99 monthly fee that they normally charged that was being waived. Maybe I misunderstoond. :confused3

I was charged $19.99 for the microchip. It's not the cheapest Vet in town, but I like them and I've been taking our dogs there since we moved here in 1991. I trust them, even if they are overcharging me!

Now, if we could just get a GPS system that is the same size as the microchip for them, they'd wouldn't be lost for too long without us finding them!

She was chipped when I got her from the breeder! I need to call and update my info since the move, thanks for the reminder!!!

I have just been trying to peruse the Home Again website for information, but it has changed since I signed up. I can't figure out my user ID right now, so I have to wait a bit to see if their "membership" has changed...

Our 3yo Bichon is; had it done when he was neutered. We'll have the puppy done also. Our older dogs aren't. One was an older rescue and there was little risk of her getting lost; since we've had her she's become completely blind so doesn't go far from the house even in the back yard. Our other dog is a rescue and we've had her since before microchips were as common; she has gotten out but goes to find friends and she wears tags so we've always gotten a call pretty quickly.

I've heard that Banfield uses a chip not used by most shelters so it isn't considered as good to get. Sounds like they now do both so that works. I've never heard of any chips that require monthly fees..

We had a couple of little dogs in the yard last week, they had no tags and we took them to a nearby vet for a scan. No chip either. I felt really bad calling animal control - knew they were someones pet but had no place to keep them without our dogs going crazy. :( I've been checking the shelter on petfinder and they haven't been pictured so at least I'm pretty sure they found their way home :)

We had our dog microchipped. The cheapest place to do it was at the county's animal shelter, so that's where we had it done. It gives us peace of mind in case she is ever lost without her collar.
