Hi, I'm from England and need to contact a store in the US today. Is it a public holiday because of 4th July falling over the weekend or should they be open?

Thanks for any info! I don't want to call if it's likely they'll be closed.

They should be open. Most places would have closed on Friday and/or Saturday if they were going to close at all.

The Holiday was on Friday the 3rd. I think everything should be open today. Stores have been open all weekend including on the 4th!!.

Nope, everything should be open today, as far as I know. I work for a bank and we're open, if that's any indication. :)

To my surprise, when I called in my unemployment claim yesterday, the automated message stated that due to the holiday, state offices would be closed on Friday, July 3rd, AND Monday, July 6th. I thought that odd. Seems that everything else is business as usual...stores and banks are open, mail was delivered, garbage was picked up...

Some government agencies are making traditionally 3 day weekends 4 day weekends in order to save money. My mom works at the health department and they are doing that 4 or 5 times this year with the extra day being unpaid. Each employee also has to take 4 or 5 more unpaid days throughout the year, but it's definitely better than losing your job.
