It's nice, but COME ON...........

The famous Austrian painter Gustav Klimt has reportedly set a record for the most expensive painting to be sold. The 1907 iconic work "Portrait of Adele Block-Bauer I" has sold for $135 million dollars.
The billionaire cosmetics heir to the Estée Lauder fortune, Ronald S Lauder snapped the painting up to be exhibited in a museum in New York.
The painting was stolen by the Nazis in 1938 from the aunt and uncle of Maria Altmann. Maria only recently became the owner of the painting this year after reclaiming it. The work had been hanging in the National Gallery of Austria for the past 60 years.

Some people see it as owning a painting ... others see it as an investment. Perhaps Lauder sees it as both.

As an investment, its value will increase. Imagine what the original owners prob. paid for it? Probably a couple hundred dollars (which, at that time was a lot!). Now, someone is paying millions for it. Somewhere down the road, it'll be fetching a lot more than what it was purchased for today.

Is it "worth" that much money? I suppose it is to the person who is buying it.

Personally, I would prefer a Van Gogh or a Renoir -- not that I'd ever have that kind of cash to purchase one.

wish I were the one selling it for that!!! I'm sure she made a real hefty profit :)

I'm more of a Dali girl.

Even still, I wouldn't pay that much for any piece of art.

It is worth what somebody is willing to pay for it. :teeth: I actually do see the beauty of it but alas we don't have that kind of money.

I saw that on the news last night and thought wow it mus be nice to have that kind of cash to spend on a painting.

No, but then I'm not a good judge. I see paintings selling for a lot of money and they look like something I could do. I really don't understand what dictates good art from bad art.

I saw that on the news last night and thought what a waste of money. I mean I like some art and don't mind people spending money on it. Even thousands on it, especially people who have alot of money, good for them. But $135 MILLION? What a waste.

A friend gave me a pair of clogs with that painting on them. They are funky but when I found out the price for the clogs I flipped ...285.00!! I wear them once in a while and get tons of compliments due to the fact that they are so different and out there but really both the painting and the clogs are not worth it!

Yes, I like it and I'm sure he is going to use it for aesthetics and to make money off of it, too.

He can display it, have it on loan, and make printings, such as calendars and posters. When I see a piece like this for sale, I can see it as an investment.

Oops, forgot to add: Because it's such a rare piece, it may also increase in value so I can see the reasoning in investing in corporate art.

Art can definitely be big business.

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure it's the beauty of the painting as much as it's the rarity of the piece combined with the story behind it that makes it that much more valuable.

Obviously none of us can imagine spending that kind of money on anything, that goes without saying.

I think shes beautiful and the style is fascinating. It reminds me of when you first lay eyes on someone and fall in "instant love and fascination" or infatuation. The moment was captured perfectly. Its like someone hits you in the psyche when that happens.
A stunning portrait.
I was at the St Louis art museum the other day and I disliked most of the art on the top floor. I loved the rest, but others loved the top floor. SImple preferance. One mans ceiling is another mans floor.

I just need to change my siggie to read, "What Bob said."
