Is this true?

I read the following about the Liberty Square Riverboat on a "secrets of Disney World" type website:

"We found the best place to see characters was the Riverboat in Liberty Square. You can't guarantee who will be on the boat, but it usually includes either Mickey or Minnie. We went twice, and both times there were at least 7-8 characters on board. It's not well advertised, and we had a chance to see them all with little or no waiting. It was only done for part of the day. "

This is completely unadvertised on the Disney website. So the question is, is this true, and if so, what time of day does it happen?

Was on the boat in January and again in February and never saw one character. I doubt this is true. The only time we saw a character was walking with a handler to their resting place behind a closed door and standing for pictures and autographs at their designated spot. No more random places. Which is sad.

Never heard of or seen that...
I want to know when they are going that it's a mobile meet and greet.

Finally rode the Liberty for the first time last year--no characters in sight.

As far as I know, this is totally bogus. Sounds like someone is making things up, just so that he can claim to have "secrets" that no one else knows.

I think I read that they used to do something like this at the parties (MNSSHP and MVMCP), but it apparently happened years ago.

My DH loves the Riverboat, so we always ride it if it's running, and we've never seen any characters.

The author may have confused it with the Mark Twain Riverboat at Disneyland. One time we rode with Belle; Woody and Jessie are also reported to be onboard @ DL.

Have ridden the riverboat at Disney World's MK many times, never seen a character anywhere near it.

Same here - have been onboard multiple times, never a character on board. Sounds like a pants on fire rating to me! :confused3

Same here! As annual passholders we go to WDW several times a year andhave ridden the riverboat countless times. We've never seen a character on it.:rotfl:

We saw the Song of the South/Splash Mountain characters (the Brairs: rabbit, fox and bear) on the boat dock when the Mark Twain returned during a mid-'90s trip, so this might be an out-of-date, rather than inaccurate, tip. I've also seen characters on and around Disneyland's riverboat, but not recently outside of party times.

We used to do Riverboat sets back in the day (Mid/Late 90's if I remember correctly). They were a lot of fun! Once all of the guests on the boat got their photos and autographs, it was just play time and it's rare that characters get time to just have fun with the guests like that. It made for some great "Magic Moments"!

I know we had the Country Bears (Wendell, Shaker & Liverlips) and I can't remember who else. It's been a LONG time since then and who knows if they are starting it up again, but I doubt it. You never know, though.

However, I'd check the date of that info you found if it even has the date listed, as it may be really old info.

After a bit of googling, I found that this tip was on allears.net, but in their defense, this tip was sent in by a reader, and my guess is that the page it was on just hasn't been updated in awhile. (I couldn't find a date on it.) I would still recommend allears.net as a good planning site, though. But for character meet and greets, kennythepirate.com is a great resource.

Thanks to everyone for responding! Glad to see that myth busted.

It's probably just an outdated tip (or maybe from Disneyland like someone suggested) rather than a myth. ;)

It must be copy and pasted several places, because the site I actually found it on was wdwinfo.com. The list of secrets was compiled via a thread here on disboards:

During the 25th anniversary celebration there were characters on the riverboat just about every time it sailed.
