The moving guy was here the other day to take inventory and the list of things we CANT take with us is long. Obviously the fish have found a new home but the biggest thing we cant take is any liquid that has been opened.

Once I started going through my cupboards and linen closets and that means a lot of stuff!
He said we cant even pack nail polish, liquids that have a good seal on them if theyve been opened, and shampoos etc.

So my idea was to just put it all out on the counter right before we leave and let my friends come over and take what they want. I hate for it to all go waste.

I know that I really appreciated it when our friends moved and gave us stuff.

So is this weird?

I've never used a mover so I don't know if this is normal or not. Sound strange. The fish I understand, but no opened nail polish? :confused3

I know I questioned that too but they had a huge list of "donts" that was specifically on there.

They said because no matter how well the cap is on there is always a chance of them opening.

FUnny I can never get nail polish open when I need it! :confused3

Also nail polish might be part of the chemical list. I dont know.

Are the movers going to go through your bathroom boxes and personally inspect them for open nail polish? I'd pack those few boxes myself, personally. I wouldn't want movers or anyone else packing up my bathroom items. They don't need to know what is in my medicine cabinet. :)

I think that is a little extreme on their part. I can see not taking open bottles of cleaning products, detergents, etc, as that would possibly ruin alot of things if they were to get crushed or spill, etc.

Why would your movers be packing this kind of thing anyway? Aren't they there to pack and move the major stuff like furniture/appliances, perhaps books/dvds/cds, clothes, etc.?

They just don't want liability for something opening up and ruining stuff. I would either pack it all myself and throw it in my car (don't know how far you are moving, but we did this with a lot of stuff so as not to have to pack it according to the movers' specs) or pack it up really well, let them move it and hope for the best!
Good luck, moving is not fun!

Movers pack EVERYTHING, its great. When we moved from CA to NY I didn't have to do a thing, they came in boxed everything and labeled it.
The no open liquids is pretty standard, although things like no nailpolish is a bit too much. I would not want to chance anything by putting anything in boxes that was on there "no" list. If anything should happen during the move, it may void the contract and the movers may not hve to be responsible.

we were just precluded from taking certain chemicals (like pesticides that might be legal in the state we were moving from but not legal in the states the truck would be traveling through) but i don't remember anything about minor liquids.

if you want to transport them yourself i can tell you how i packed a ton of partial bottles of shampoo, lotion, bubble bath....without any spillage in the mover's truck-took a large plastic garbage bag and set it in a plastic lidded container, set the closed bottles in the bag and tied it shut, put the bottles of polish into a ziplock inside the bigger bag-then put the lid on. nothing even spilled into the garbage bag:thumbsup2

Personally, I'm not a big fan of giving away opened items like nail polish and shampoos. I understand why the movers won't take them, but I can't imagine that you'd have so much of the stuff that it would be difficult for you to pack and throw it in your vehicle.

Old clothes and brick-a-brack that you don't want are perfect give away items.

If you're moving by air that's another thing, in which case I'd just throw them out.

Thats my concern. He said they peek into every box to make sure its packed correctly if it isnt they will repack. Im sure its a liability issue. There will be some things that they wont be allowed into but this is a company paid for move and I dont deal with ticking anyone off kWIM? LOL

When we move they pack EVERYTHING. It's the only way they are responsible. Plus, I've moved enough times that unpacking is bad enough, let them pack it all. It's what the company pays for (DH's company always pays for our moves because they are work related).

I've found that it really depends on the packer what they pack and what they don't even tho it's on their list of "no's".

The truck driver has always packed our kitchen and they've always taken everything in there.

Cleaners are another story. I've had them not pack any of them, and I've had them pack all of them. Went to get the oven cleaner and it had been packed.

I say if they are packing you up to let them go thru and pack what they will and see what is left. Take with you what you can, let your friends go thru the rest.

I must say I'm not that girlie and don't have tons of nail polish, but what I have they have ALWAYS taken.

Good luck with your move. Just remember - anything you don't want them to pack/take, make sure it's clearly marked, or in an area you show them and say "This DOESN'T get packed".

::yes::

What takes us 4 weeks to pack would take a moving company 2-3 days. This is why when we go to move to our next house hopefully in the not too distant future I'm going to harrangue DH about using 1. We've used UHaul twice. I've no desire to use it again ever.

thats the other thing, nothing in the car. They move that too and they wont allow anything to be packed in the car.
Thats for insurance. I am not even sure we will have a car to take other the company rig we are trying to sell ours before we move.

I just hate to waste everything we have alot of stuff. I have 3 kids and we buy bulk.

I thought your dh was in the military? I guess we've moved so much in dh's military career, I think everyone else has, too.;)

binny, they never never take nail polish or cleaning supplies. We've had 6 sets of movers and those things always get left behind. I give my cleaning supplies away to friends and put the nail polish in my suitcase.

They WILL, however, pack your trash (really try to avoid that), and your fridge/appliances with anything left over inside. If you're not getting your stuff for a few weeks (or months) it can really be a smelly surprise to open.:scared:

They are moving the Car too???

Boy that's a new 1 on me. I've known plenty of ppl who've done interstate move and they've always driven their own cars through the move. I had 1 family on my street with 2 cars, and I think they sold 1 and kept the minvan fior the move. But i might be wrong and they drove both cars.

So now that curiosity is peaked, where are you moving to?

you're very fortunate your dh's company pays for it-if you were to price out for self-pay the difference in having them pack vs. self packing it's insanely expensive. when we moved a couple of years ago the average difference with all the companies that did out of state moves where we lived was as much as triple the cost of what self packing ran (we packed it, the movers loaded the truck, transported it and loaded it into the new place). granted, the movers might be able to do in 2-3 days what took me a few weeks of part time work, but when it's going to increase your tab by more than $6000.00 :scared1: :scared1:

we're going to Denver. He is commuting until we sell this house so it isnt so bad.
At the moment though we have 2 company vehicles out front. One we are storing for the company until they hire someone else to take J's old job and the one for the new territory that arrived on Saturday. BUT the new car is going away (still cant figure out why they sent it all the way from the South) because its miles are too high and its time for a trade in.

He doesnt really even need one until we move but they insist that it goes with the territory so wherever the rep is thats where the car goes. Not that Im complaining. I just think its funny.

They put the co vehicles and the personal vehicle on a car carrier and put us and our pets on a plane. We can drive if we want to but depending on when we go, driving from here to Denver may not be the best plan. Also I have 2 cats I dont want to keep them sedated for 2 days to travel.

That one hasn't happened to me, but has to the DH's co-workers. :scared1: I'm rather obsessed with making sure the garbage is out on the curb when the movers come in.

And our movers have always told us no opened liquids. (But what gets packed depends very much on WHICH packer is packing that cabinet at that moment!) Also, one trip, we were told no booze, even if unopened.

As for the cars, DH's company will ship 2 cars. You can get deals on shipping cars if you look, and I've contemplated doing that, but with our dogs and the cats and the fact that Dh's company will pay for you to either drive down (mileage, hotel and food unless we drive the company car, which is already paid for. . .) or to fly down (tickets and food and hotel if necessary) but not for pet transport (KA-ching for 5 animals, especially when one weighs 80 lbs and one weighs 35 lbs!) it has always made better since for us to ship 2 cars (Company car and the truck) and drive my car (SUV).

Good luck and I hope nothing goes missing or gets broken. (I've lost 2 digital cameras and a garnet ring to packers and movers!)

Could you mail a box of that stuff to your new address? I'm not sure what the rules are for mailing liquids but you could check to see if there is anything yu can send so it doesn't get wasted.

Octoberbride03, we had our car moved when we went from CA to NY. We had originally moved from NY to CA and drove ourselves across the country. When we moved back, I had a 2 year old and a newborn, no way was I doing that again :rotfl:

For some reason, I thought you were just moving across town! Where are you going?

Good luck!

I've never been lucky enough to have a move that paid for packers, so I'm no help there. Our only relocation-type move had the transport paid for. I had them to do a little bit of the last minute packing, and it was $$$$.

That might work too. Thanks!

the real bummer is I have no way to take my plants so I am going to have to leave them with a friend and come back and get them when we come through this summer.

For some reason, I thought you were just moving across town! Where are you going?

From Boise to Denver. So a 2 day drive if we decide to go that route.
