is this too weird?

How far are you moving and how many open liquid items will there be?

I would think all those liquids are the ones that would need to be used first thing when you get to the new house.

Nope if it is a Good Friend. My Girlfriend did the same thing when she moved to AK.

To answer your original question, certainly if you were my friend, I would be appreciative of any "liquids" such as shampoo, etc, that you'd be giving away. I mean really, what weird or gross thing could come from using somebody's opened shampoo? I might shy away from your mouthwash ;) however, friend or not.

I have a real problem with massive waste like that too. I'd have no problem donating or receiving such items.

Pack all that stuff and put it in your car. I wouldn't get rid of it, that's a lot of money!

Granted it has been years since we moved and I was a child so I don't remember everything but I don't remember them ever not moving liquids.

We moved from OK to GA, GA to NJ, NJ to WI, and then finally WI to TX. All company paid for moves. We joke now that mom still has big furniture items with moving stickers stuck on them somewhere and sometimes more than 1 or 2 stickers too.

We always had the company come in and do the pack and load the truck and then we went by car.

I do remember the move from GA to NJ, our cat was pregnant. Mom just made up a box for the cat to ride in and put a litter box back there, and yes, the cat did have her babies driving down the highway. Something I will never forget.

They also always moved our plants. The plants would be one of the last things on the truck and she always made nice with the drivers so that they would give the plants some air and sun when they could.

Best of luck to you.

...they never never take nail polish or cleaning supplies.

They WILL, however, pack your trash.....If you're not getting your stuff for a few weeks (or months) it can really be a smelly surprise to open.:scared:

I have had some say they wouldn't take those cleaning supplies and when I wennt to look for them after the movers had gone--they were nowhere to be found! :headache:

AND I've had them pack trash, too. Fortunately it wasn't stinky kitchen trash, but still. :scared:

We are lucky that the company pays for our moves, then again I might put my foot down and say no more moves if I had to pack it all myself.

They have always taken one of our cars on the truck too. Next move might be more interesting. DH always took the vehicle allowance instead of just taking the company car. Now he has a Prius and his own truck. Hopefully they'll move both of them, if we have to move this summer no way can I drive long distances with a baby by myself and him in another car.

I have had a mover try to pack a wet towel. We had stayed the night at the house and I hung my towel to dry before they got there. I was planning on putting it in a laundry basket with our dirty clothes and luckily I went in while they were packing my bathroom. I saw it in the box. IT wouldn't have been so bad because it was February, but could you imagine if it was summer. YUCK.

Binny - it's totally different if you don't have a vehicle to load all the stuff they won't take into. If you have a gas grill you'll have to give away your tank and buy a new one when you get moved. That's why we don't have an extra like many people do, we just don't have the room to take two with us every move!!

to answer your question-

leave the stuff on the counter...whatever isn't taken can be tossed. It's probably not worth it to mail it.

You can find most things here in CO I promise;)

No, it's not too weird. My DH use to be the Operations Manager for a major moving company and they had the same policy.

Good luck with your move!

We have a Rhino tank. We plan on using it until its empty and then turn it in. They will give you a voucher now for a new one when you get to the new destination. I didnt know that but our relo specialist told us.

Yikes on the wet towel.:scared1:

I thought your dh was in the military? I guess we've moved so much in dh's military career, I think everyone else has, too.;)

binny, they never never take nail polish or cleaning supplies. We've had 6 sets of movers and those things always get left behind. I give my cleaning supplies away to friends and put the nail polish in my suitcase.

They WILL, however, pack your trash (really try to avoid that), and your fridge/appliances with anything left over inside. If you're not getting your stuff for a few weeks (or months) it can really be a smelly surprise to open.:scared:

He is, but he's been with this unit for 5 years so far, plus we've only been married just over a year, so no military moves for us as of yet.

I've never used professional movers.

I'm pretty much tied to this county until my kids are 18, as is my ex. Both of us are restricted from living outside this county if we want to keep the 50/50 custody we currently have.

:rotfl2:

I kind of expected that I could.

Like I said I just hate for it to go to waste if others can use it.

My company moved me from Chicago to Tampa - and also had the no liquid rule.

Im a product junkie. I have more nail polish than a salon. All that stuff was packed up, and put in the car with me (we drove - we had the option of them shipping the cars, but our place wasnt going to be ready for 2 weeks, anyways)

We made a mini-vacation of it. With the company paying for all the hotel and food bills - we had a nice time traveling down. We spent a few days in Nashville. Had a lot of fun.

Someone else suggested shipping it - I agree. Just be sure to get there, before your box does.

Good luck on the move!! and welcome again to our beautiful state. :goodvibes

I just can't get past the movers packing TRASH!!
Why on earth would they do that?

I agree with this. I see nothing odd about offering opened items to friends. Our former neighbors used to do this all the time at Passover. They'd give us food that they couldn't have in the house, and we'd eat most of it.

If you are driving yourselves you could pack a box of the things the movers can't take. Otherwise either leave them, or give them to neighbors are your only options. Nothing wrong with that. At least if friends/neighbors take them they aren't being wasted.

I know with one move - I put plastic wrap over all open containers, under the caps, and the movers finally accepted them. Typically they don't like to move them for all the reasons mentioned earlier.

Your local food shelf would be glad to take your opened bottles of shampoo, nail polish, etc. That is one thing our area food shelf is always asking for.

I worked for northAmerican Van lines for years. Called the one rep, from one of the bigger household goods agents, that I worked closely with. And while there is a chemical issue - household cleaners, air fresheners, laundry products - these should not be moved. You can get a crew that will pack these items, though. Body sprays, hair spray(pump bottles), nail polish, shampoo - these can and should be moved. 98% of the packers will pack these items. Some times you'll get that 1 crew that won't pack them. If you want to make sure these items don't get kicked, he said to go to the $ store and get some cheap make up bags, load this stuff up in the bags and just have them sitting in the bathroom. The packers will just load it up.

As a side note from having worked within this industry for so long and the possibilities of lose/damage claims, please take pictures or videos of your larger pieces of furniture, collectables and anything of value, including the cars. Notate any damage/wear and tear that is currently visible. Carry this support information on you when you move. They will have loading manifest for each box packed, with what items are in each box. They should be noting any damage to items as they pack. Make sure you look over each list CAREFULLY! Make sure that what they note as damage/wear and tear is as it's listed. If at all possible, have an adult in each room with the packers and watch as they are packing. If they are not packing delicate items to your liking, tell the packer to stop and get the lead man involved. Believe me, when one of the packers for our first move made the comment that they hated dried floral arrangements, he was not the one I allowed to touch anything in my living room. One of the other packers and I did it all, as I knew how to pack these items to move safely.

I just can't get past the movers packing TRASH!!
Why on earth would they do that?

During our move from Ohio to California, we bought our packing crew lunch. The pizza boxes and soda bottles were packed in boxes labeled KITCHEN. They are paid to pack, not think. Anything that you do not want packed you must put away out of reach. We used our car for this and retrieved the carry-on bags after the packers were done. All liquids were stored in the garage and we called numerous shelters and groups to try and give the stuff away.
