We just bought a house and I called around getting quotes to have the floors refinished (approx. 600 sq ft of wood floors).

The best price was $1650!

I guess I am just stupid because I thought it would be about $500.

Does this seem high to anyone else, or am I just out of touch with reality.

Doesn't sound high at all. That's approx $2.75 per sq ft and with all the work that is done, not bad at all.

It cost us $400 just to get our bedroom floor redone, and that was almost 20 years ago.

3 years ago when we bought our house, we refinished all our hardwood floors upstairs and down plus the steps for about $2200. We have 1600 sq. ft. but the kitchen and both bathrooms are tiled. I don't remember how much real space we covered. I think we paid $1.80/sq. ft. and the steps were priced separately.

no, it's very hard work.

Figure how many day's it will take, how many workers, think of their hourly wage, then double it for overhead.

Actually, considering around here the price for refinishing wood is about $6.50 a square foot( and since i am in remodeling bizz.. I shoulld know) thats really a bit low for 600 sq ft.

Are they just putting another coat of polyurethane on? Or are they sanding and restaining as well?

We are looking into getting our foyer, very short hall and powder room refinished (not restained though) and we were quoted about $1300. I'm guessing it's about 700 sq. ft. I thought that was a little high, because we just had hardwood put in DH's office (which is 14.6 x 16.8 ft) for only $2400. And that was including taking the carpet out and installing the hardwood.

Doesn't sound bad to me. We had about the same amount of floor done for about the same money.

Get three prices from reliable companies and go with the middle one. Doesn't really sound high to me. I need to have mine done. Refinishing floors is tough work.
