Is this the replacement for p&s?

It's an interesting concept. Why pay for a new camera with every phone upgrade?

The QX100 is the RX100M2 sensor and lens for $250 less...but I don't think the QX let's you shoot RAW.

Yes, it doesn't shoot raw.
On the other hand, get the benefit of touch screen focus.

So if you shoot jpeg, you're getting a Rx100m2 with touch screen, wifi, etc... For $250 less than the rx100.
Or for $250, getting a pretty good 10x p&s in very compact form-- with wifi, touch screen, etc.

Assuming of course you have a smart phone! Otherwise, you have to go get one of those two, which raises the cost of entry.

The big question for those who don't have a smart phone and may not want to pay for the smart phone data plans required to go with one...will the QX cameras be compatible with an iPod touch? That could give you the same smart-phone type interface without the data plan or cell service.

Yep, it supports iOS. It uses WiFi and the Sony PlayMemories app to control it, there's also rumours it'll work without a smartphone at all, that it's similar to the GoPro set up, and the phone is only a viewfinder and shutter remote for it. It does have a SD Card slot, pretty sure it's doesn't shoot RAW which makes it less useful.

Good question. In theory, compatibility is an operating system issue.

Truthfully, this product isn't designed for the shrinking non-smart phone market.

It's for smart phone owners, debating whether they really even benefit from a stand alone p&s.

As the prices of the qx cameras come down and more options are introduced,
It can eventually be an interchangeable lens equivalent.

Imagine a full frame with prime lens...
The Rx100 equivalent with a mid range zoom..
And the a compact sensor with a telephoto zoom...

All 3.. For maybe $1500-2000.... Could be an interesting replacement for a dSLR for many people.
