Yesterday and today when I booted up, an error message came up saying that my Norton Anti-Virus driver couldn't be found and therefore wasn't on. I ignored it yesterday, but today immediately ran my full system scan.

While it was running, I was chatting on MSN IM with my friend and she said something about a radio station (we were discussing Live365).

Immediately after her message, a message (from "her") popped up on the IM with links telling me to go to three websites (one was blogcritics.org/...) for holiday radio. I accidentally clicked on it, but before it could totally load, I was able to back out of it.

My Norton didn't find a virus and my adaware found 91 objects, most of which were negligible. Now when I try to enable my Norton, it won't let me. So right now, I'm unprotected (except my router firewall which doesn't seem to help much anyway).

I've done a search for spyware that disables anti-virus software and attacks IM, but I'm not sure what my solution is.

Any thoughts?

I'd call Norton right away. I had a similar incident on my laptop and ended up with an incredibly nasty virus. It took several long weeks to finally just quarantine it and after some time it was finally removed (thank you Spy Sweeper!). The only reason I knew about this was that the virus disabled Norton.

I'm not sure what is going on, but just wanted to say get rid of Norton! It's worthless in my opinion!

Restore your PC to a few days ago..... it'll put you right back where you were. THEN call Norton see what those clowns have to say and then...

Ask for a new Virus Protection program for Christmas. I second that Norton is useless.

Also, do your scans in safe mode (both virus and spyware).

I also agree that Nortons is worthless. It is a computer memory/usage hog and is less effective than other programs. I recommend Kaspersky

ok if not Norton, what do you all use? My dd's free month of Norton is coming to a close and not sure if we should buy it or something else. Thanks

Both Norton and McAfee seem to have added so much overhead to their products that they seem to drag down any systems they're installed on.

My wife's recommending Computer Associate's eTrust now.

WOW,the same thing happened to me today.my computer gave me a error message that said norton anti virus could not load and to restart the system, which i did several times.but every time the same message came up.what do i do now?????

I found this reference: It shows how to check if you have this virus and how to get Norton back up and running. I am going to be the lone voice in saying that I have used norton in the past and while it was somewhat of a hog, it has been the only stable antivirus product with my development machine. I'm currently running eztrust, but it's IMHO a hog too.

Dan,
I don't mean to hijack the thread (sorry vettechick99), but my norton is up in about a week or so and I would like to get something different and I was looking at Panda (I have seen you mention it before). Do you think it makes a difference if I get the Titanium 2006 Antivirus + Antispyware or the Platinum 2006 Internet Security?
I personally do not use the Internet Security package, but rather the other.

I prefer to have the best software for a purpose. I do turn orr the firewall feature in Panda and use the pay-for Zone Alarm Pro. Even though Panda Anitvirus incorporates anti spyware also, I rely on pay-for versions of Ad-Aware Plus and Spysweeper, along with the free Microsoft anti-sopyware beta program. With those five programs, 4 of them I pay for, I feel quite confident and have 0 problems. Costs me about a hundred busks a year or so.

ME TOO it has happened for about a week. My husband kept blaming my son for doing something. My stupid computer will not let me go on line, to buy anything or sign in for web site except it lets me go on here.

I tried but could not figure out how to do it. As I said my husband is very happy with me not being able to buy on line. Of course I can just do it at work if I am desperate! He is now using the info you posted to get rid of this other thing. Thanks for all your help

Dan my husband did what you said re:Panda and it worked!!! Thank God your name is Dan and not Danielle he would probably have ignored your advice!

We had 4 viruses, 41 spyware, and 5 dialers which scared the heck out of me. I would not mind but I faithfully ran NOrton adaware and spybot a couple of times a week too!

Anyway...I am back in business!! Yipee just in time for Christmas!
