Is this really private?

Nothing on the internet is private. Nothing.

And there is a lot of information about you that has NEVER been private, the Internet makes it a lot easier to access.
Sales people buy cross directories from Haines, they've been around for 50 years. They search public records and very likely have your name, address, phone number and number of people in your household listed.
If you vote, your party affiliation is public record.
If you got a traffic ticket, it is public record.
If you volunteered for a youth group, a criminal background check likely was done on you, and that is public record.
If you have been divorced, had to probate an estate, owned property, it's public record.
If you have children in public school, all your information is public record.

Don't believe me? Google your name. Or google your address. Or google your phone number. Or if you really want to be freaked out, google your name and click the IMAGES option. I did, and a picture someone I barely know took came up, they posted it on a Photobucket account.

I have never really considered it private:confused3 My husband knows I spend a lot of time on the DIS--I tell him stories about some of the threads and we always post on the meet threads for our cruises--it is what started me on the DIS addiction:goodvibes He knows my user name because I figured i would keep it consistent when we started a youtube account (even though we no longer lived in NH when we started that one:rolleyes:) I don't think he is interested enough in the DIS to ever bother reading here.
DD13 reads sometimes. She wants to start her own account but is in too much of a quandary deciding on a user name:rotfl:

Now I did realize the kids had been posting (perfectly benign) comments on youtube--shows up under my name (we are just automatically logged in there). So it looks like I am a fan of old Brady Bunch and Bewitched episdoes:lmao: I told them to stop posting under my name and get their own:rotfl2: Made me think of some of the "my friend hijacked my account that wasn't ME with the totally inconsistent story" threads we see here:rolleyes1 :rotfl:

There really isn't much on the internet that's "private" (or anything really - somewhere someone knows about it).

I haven't got a clue if my family knows I post here. DD does but DH would have to be seriously ILL to come to a board about Disney. He thinks it's evil (basically a human trap run by a mouse. ;) ), so I would about fall over if I saw him looking at the board.

I know others from other boards that post here, I think they do but I don't necessarily know their usernames. I know I found out one of DD's gymnastics coaches is on here but mostly on the budget board. I couldn't tell you her username to save my life because I didn't find it that important to remember it.

My spouse knows I post here, and it wouldn't bother me for him to see what I post, because I don't share a lot of really personal stuff. But he won't ever read here. He thinks the whole idea of having conversations with strangers on the internet is ridiculous.:lmao:

Mine too! I don't really care if people I know / love see what I write.

I'm more open than most probably.... and yeah....fam knows I post here.... do they read it? Doubt it...they have better things to do...lol
If they do...no biggie...I'm thinkin if the DIS knows about it, they already do too.. :goodvibes

The only issue I ever had posting here was a DIS meet on our Disney Magic Cruise in 2008. 2 - 3 people at the meet said they recognized my kids from the pictures in my board signature. But after I thought about it, I realized this group of people had researched their vacations in a effort to make the most of their investment and that it was OK if that group of people recognized my kids. :thumbsup2

Absolutely not Private. I don't know about family members, but...

I met a woman in real life and was able to figure out that not only was she a Diser, I was able to figure out which poster. Let's just say, it was a little embarrassing since this poster had posted some "private" things about her life. ;)

My hubby and family know I post here. They also trust me on any internet board to not post things that should be private, about them, their friends, or our extended family. That is one thing that has alway surprised me with some people on the Dis...the private things that are said about their families, friends, neighbors, and things that shouldn't be shared about the people around them.
As someone said, the internet is not private, and if you talk bad about your neighbors, you should not think they will never find out, and it could end up being very hurtful, as it was when one person posted very private stuff about someone my neighbor knows. Could come back to bite you.

Welcome to the DIS, Waste. Good first post.

For me, yeah, I try to keep everything private. :lmao:

I don't know if any of my family knows I post or searches for my threads, but I don't really see DISBoards as being private at all.

My entire family knows about the DIS (they sent flowers to BOTH of my parent's funerals, Pete even spoke to my Mom once!) and my son and BF have logins. Sometimes my BF reads it to find out what's on my mind since we live in two different states now. He no longer posts but he reads A LOT.

 Hi, honey!!

I'm with the group that believes nothing on the internet is private. My husband knows I post on a few message boards but he doesn't ever use the computer. My daughter posts on the Dis and she knows that I do as well. But she knows my passwords to most web sites so nothing is secret from her!

My family knows I post all over the internet and that I don't post anything that I wouldn't want my mother to read :)

You have to think of the internet as a window into your life, nothing is hidden, what horrified me though is if I googled my DD and SIL names (they are military and I understand public records to an extent) but I can find their ranks their promotions and pay their addresses or at least towns and bases. Right down to the competitve sports and how they did..That's more than a little scary to me

People know I post here but no one is really interested in this site. I don't post anything about other people that could be embarassing though.

I don't thing that's the point. I think the OP was asking do people KNOW your username and if they read your posts. Anyone knows that if you use your real name you'll pull up a host of items.
