My daughter has severe food allergies, so severe that I have to use Clorox wipes and shopping cart covers at the grocery store or she has a reaction from contact.

Would we be able to ask permission to wipe down the ride vehicles before she gets on? She's only 1, so it will only be the non-height restricted rides. Would we need the DAS for this? I worry about someone eating an allergen immediately before they rode or had snacks fall out of their bag or something.

A DAS would not help you with that.

I doubt you would be able to wipe the rides down without slowing down the loading process, but I guess you could try. It's unlikely that you would be permitted to do this if it slows down the boarding/ride procedures.

I'm guessing you could do it pretty quickly so I don't think it'll be a problem. I wouldn't ask permission; just do it while you're getting on. Doesn't sound like you'd slow things down at all..

I think some rides won't be too difficult, but continuous load rides will be. As an allergy mom, I would work to keep dd from touching the ride. I wouldn't worry too much about what she might get on her bum from the seat. I would hold her in my lap so I could keep her hands back from the bars or put her between yourself and your dh and keep her hands back. Then, I'd wipe her well after the ride. I think that's a good practice to start with an allergic kid and a more realistic habit for her to keep as she ages.

Dd has a class 6 peanut allergy, so we're not small potatoes.

I knew it wasn't an ideal situation, was just looking for a way to let her safely ride the rides she can. I know long term I can teach her to me careful where she touches, etc. I just don't see how I can teach a 12 month old not to reach out to a bar in front of her. Or pin down her arms and make her angry.

She isn't our only child so it's harder to get everyone on the ride, diaper bag, and be able to wipe down things before we sit her down. I was just wondering if there would be any sort of way to accommodate her.

We don't plan on letting her touch the characters, and we will clean all the restaurant tables and she has her own travel high chair. I was just worried about possible reactions with rides. I know we aren't the only ones with food allergies, I just don't know anyone in real life that's as sensitive as she is with reactions.

I understand. I wouldn't pin her arms down. I just held hands and that seemed to do the job. I think rides like Dumbo you won't have any issues, but loading time is very fast on continuous loaders and I don't know how easy it is to get them to slow it. I do know that I felt like we had to really hustle to get on some of the continuous load rides.

I assume she's very contact allergic? Thankfully, dd was just ingestion.

Yes, very contact allergic. I can't even let her share toys with anyone right now because she reacts when she plays with toys other kids played with. We can't feed our older daughter any of the babies allergic foods for risk of the toys or crumbs on the floor.

Me too! We started with milk, peanut, and tree nut. But we just added gluten to the list too.

This is probably your most realistic accommodation. I would sit her in your lap, then wipe the bar or whatever she would touch as you are loading. I am skeptical about them stopping the continuous loading rides for you, it is both one of those "if we let one person..." scenarios and something that is quick enough it would be silly to slow everybody's ride for 5 seconds when there is no reason not to do it as you are sitting. Realistically you only need to wipe down what she is going to touch, not the entire ride, and wiper her hands when you get up. While it isn't terribly complicated I'm sorry that I doubt there is any way for it to not feel stressful at first.

If you are really worried about her sitting on the seats, you could try bringing some receiving blankets and just tossing one under her. While it might "feel" more safe, you would probably be more likely to cause a problem that way than solve one. (you could pick up an allergen and now it is attached to your blanket, then it rubs off or ends up upside down ONCE)

it will depend on ride, if you are one of first to load at Dumbo or that type of ride you should be okay. but like boats of Small World, you are not going to have time before you have to be seated. DAS is not going to help you and even if the do slow ride down you are not going to have enough time to do a good job of cleaning, just a quick wipe. the best advice I can offer is to have wipe ready, get in and wipe down as you are starting to move while holding her. you would have more time to wipe down and wipe her hands right then. also be aware of lines and being able to touch anything. you can have parents giving snacks to kids while in line so peanut butter can be there and she could be touched even while in a stroller as a wheelchair while in line.

I was never expecting to be able to spend minutes cleaning out a whole ride car. And don't intend to wipe every square inch. This will simply be our first trip with a child with severe allergies and I'm just trying to do my best to keep her from having a reaction on vacation. I can't imagine needing more than 5 seconds to wipe down where she will be before she sits down. Logistically, I'm just trying to figure out how to get it wiped off while loading. I'm just nervous out the unknown and was hoping someone could help.

We do plan on using the stroller as a wheelchair, she is small and one of us will be in front and the other behind so she has a safe, allergen free zone.

Have you considered wearing her in a baby wrap or Ergo. You would be able to keep her closer to you and prevent her from touching the chains/poles that separate the queues. An Ergo baby carrier is soft and you can wear her on your back or on your front facing you.

wearing a carrier in line is a good idea as there are places that she is going to be able to reach chains even in a stroller. we did not see anything on chain but had a grandson react while in line. he reacts as soon as he touches, so yes it can happen. there are rides at even a few seconds of wiping will cause a problem without getting in and doing it then and I am talking about family rides. some rides you will not be able to wipe bar until in comes in place as you need to be seated as it starts to move as bar comes toward you. another idea, how about thin gloves for her to wear while on ride, possibly throw away. just another idea, just keep her hands from her face

I say wipe away. If anyone says anything just say there was something nasty that you needed to remove.

But I would probably not use Clorox wipes. The bar won't have time to dry and then your daughter will be coating her hands in the toxic chemicals. There are non-toxic cleaning wipes out there, but maybe you could just use baby wipes? You don't need to kill germs, just remove any surface allergens. Another possibility would be homemade cleaning wipes. There are lots of recipes out there and you can choose one that doesn't contain any possible problem ingredients. Most are just a diluted vinegar solution.

I say wipe away but have the wipe ready as to not delay anything. They also sell Lysol travel sprays (I got mine at bed bath and beyond) if that would help.

I see a few problems with the child and Disney

1) Wiping enough area on a ride vehicle is going to be tough.
. . . there is not enough time to catch available surfaces
. . . the rides will not slow down or stop for you
. . . most of the rides for the height are continuous or set cycles
. . . taking a spray can might be satisfactory and WOULD be quick enough

2) Stroller
. . . when parked, the stroller is moved by CM's
. . . you will not know where the touching was done
. . . you will have to clean every time you retrieve a stroller
. . . and, you cannot lock in place, as the CM's are instructed to cut the locks off

3) Other people contact
. . . when in the parks, you cannot stop others from toughing the stroller or the child
. . . frequent people-to-people contact is very common at WDW
. . . contact: in line, on rides, at meals, while walking, while standing

4) Food
. . . you will need to find a way to clean table surfaces when eating
. . . some may have table cloths and/or place mats
. . . you, of course, will have to clean the eating utensils
. . . when at an eatery, people always brush up against folks at tables
. . . plus, you cannot control what folks are eating at the nearest tables
. . . and, we will not discuss other children who toss food


NOTE: You have a complicated problem. I think a lot more forethought is
necessary for protection. It is going to be a VERY stressful vacation for the
adults in the party.

Using any kind of disinfecting spray would be pointless (and almost certainly not allowed). You can't kill food allergens, they need to be physically wiped away.

I think if the OP is reasonably vigilant (which is almost certainly instinctual at this point) they will be just fine. Perhaps for extra security they could use a cover on the stroller to prevent anyone from touching it when the baby isn't in it.
