Is this polite? Foolish?

More of my Craigslist adventures! We're selling our old (broke) riding mower on craigslist. I've gotten a LOT of inquiries about it but one guy actually called, chatted with us about it, and made an appointment to come and get it tonight at 5:30pm. Not to come and see it, but to come pay for it and take it home.

All day today I have gotten phone call after phone call from guys who want the mower and when I tell them that someone is coming to get it tonight at 5:30pm EVERY ONE OF THEM has said "I'll come and get it right now!"

um...no.

For starters my DH doesn't get home until 5pm and I am home alone at the farm and will not have strangers just showing up. Second, I made an appointment with the first guy and feel it only right to give him first shot at the mower. IF he stands me up, then I move right on to the next guy on the list (I've been keeping a list of names after each call).

I think it terribly rude to make an appointment to give the item to someone and then to sell it out from under them to someone else who could get here a few hours sooner. I've had it happen to me a few times when I purchased things off of Craigslist and I think it beyond rude...but maybe I'm jst being foolish?

Anyhoo..am I being fair or foolish? I AM going to wait till 5:30 for guy 1. I've already got a small army of guys lined up if he bails.

Nope, you're not being foolish at all. You're acting politely by waiting for the 1st guy to show. And I agree with you, I wouldn't want some random stranger coming over unless my DH was home too. Smart move on your part and I think you're doing the right thing by letting the 1st guy buy it.:thumbsup2

I think that your plan is honest and smart.

I would not like some random Craigslist dude showing up at my house while i'm by myself....:scared:

I agree with you. I've sold a couple of appliances on craigslist within the past few weeks. I just let them know that if the guy who made the appointment to come and get it decides he doesn't want it, I will let them know. So far, I haven't had to call the backup person. :goodvibes

I think you are doing the right thing. I would never have someone come without DH home for something like this. If he doesn't show, then you can move down the list to the next person. If you were holding it for someone that couldn't come until next week, my answer would probably be different.

I think you handled it well. It would have been rude to sell it out from under him.

One time I called a lady regarding a treadmill. She gave me directions to her house and I left right then to buy it. When I got there, she had just sold it to someone else. I would never do that to someone.

The last thing I sold, I told the callers that someone said they were purchasing it, but if they didn't show up I would call people back in the order they called.
