Is this old news or new news?

I hadn't heard it before. But what sort of idiot packs $170K in cash in their checked luggage?

News to me as well. One has to wonder if anyone came forward to claim that bag...only to find that $40,000 was missing!! I mean seriously...who packs that kind of money in checked bags. They pretty much deserve to lose it. Then again, have to wonder if it was legal money, or money that was, shall we say, less than legal???

However, it sure doesn't make one feel all warm and fuzzy knowing this has been going on for years. And again I say..pack nothing of value in checked bags....if you don't want to lose something, pack it in your carryon!!

Well several years ago in LA they arrested some baggage handlers for stealing from luggage....

And they knew what to steal because the TSA agents saw the goodies on the xrays.

Teamwork in action.

However, if you are carrying that kind of cash in your checked bag... does make one wonder if headline #2 will be "Drug dealer arrested"

(Did anyone else see the crazy woman who decided to "sue"a mall because when she fell in the fountain while texting the security guards laughed at her. She went on NATIONAL TV for her "15 minutes of fame" which allowed the Florida police to find her and serve her outstanding arrest warrent... Criminals are NOT always very smart and this may be another genius move!)

Yeah, this smells of illegal money........ actually, the agents should be worried about some drug kingpin putting a hit out on them......... yeah, I watch a lot of tv, but you never know!

ITA - What an idiot. this type of stealing things out of bags has been going on forever and has always been my excuse not to pay for expensive luggage since that would attract more thievery. And now you really can't even lock your bags since TSA can unlock or snip your plastic ties at will. Once, many years ago on a spring break trip to Cancun, we landed and while sitting on the runway waiting to deplane we could see the baggage handlers going through some bags right on the tarmac next to another plane! Not even bothering to wait until the bags were out of sight!

Interesting that the majority of the posts are "blame the victim" posts. Refer to these perps as blueshirts and some folks get their panties in a wad . . .

Sources close to the investigation said that during interrogation by detectives, the two suspects admitted to taking more than $160,000 from bags at the airport dating back to 2004.

It's an endemic problem and just goes to show how ineffective the pre-employment screening is.

Oh come on!!! Do you ever miss any opportunity to bring out the 'blueshirt' comment???
Of course we all think it's an awful thing...and not one single person here condones what happened. But....what kind of an idiot puts that much cash in a checked bag and expects it to get back to him, intact???
This isn't a 'blame the victim', not even close. So quit with the 'blueshirts' comments.

It's terrible to hear this kind of news...I've never put anything in luggage that I can't afford to loose..not that I want to loose anything, but nothing of value, that's for sure....however..who in their right mind would put cash - any amount - in a suitcase? That's just crazy.

Foreign visitors from countries where CC use is unusual often travel with a lot of cash if they are planning to do serious shopping. Now $170K is definitely odd, but it wouldn't be the first time that someone decided to pay cash for a house or a yacht.

Cash in baggage being taken by ramp workers has been an issue for decades at int'l gateway airports. The handlers know that it is there, and some of them look for it. Now TSA people have just naturally joined the party.

Referring to people as idiots isn't "blame the victim?" And yet you get upset about defining other folks by the color of their uniform shirt.

I miss many opportunities to bring out the blue shirt comment. I'm trying to reserve it for illegal behavior and thuggery. This incident clearrly fits.

Sorry, but I truly believe anyone that packs $170,000 in cash, in their checked bag is an idiot!! Man, you are told not to pack anything you can't afford to lose in a checked bag...and this person packed that much cash???
I'm sorry...but if it's that big a deal, pack it in your carryon bag!!

Again, I'm sorry but I find it offensive to paint an entire group of people with the same paintbrush as the small percentage of miscreants in the same group. Just because there are unfounded perverts, theives, power hungry folk in the TSA does not mean that everyone in the TSA is that way. It's just getting tiring of the constant tirade against one group of people simply because there are some of their fellow employees that are less than terrific.

Yep, you're right. It's an endemic problem. It's BEEN an endemic problem since LONG before the TSA was created. Google Su Taraskiewicz unsolved mysteries.

TSA needs to search employees each time they enter and leave the secure areas of the airport. That would go a long way towards eliminating the thievery.

I understand your disdain for all things TSA but $170K would tempt Mother Theresa. So, yes, I am blaming the victim. I feel pretty good about it too.

Really, its not so much as blame the victime as it is..blame all those involved. #1, yes the person who check 170k in cash in a suitcase is a complete and utter moron and the only logical explanation is that it was money obtained illegally. #2, the ramp and tsa workers were obviously wrong in that its not ok to steal. lol. so to me...the 1st person didnt do anything wrong per se... just did something stupid.
