Is this for a special occasion...? an innocent question but...

Years ago - measured in decades - before values opened (and possibly before moderates and DVC), "are you celebrating something" would almost always result in pixie dust. Honeymoons and anniversaries were a small bottle of cheap champagne. Birthdays got a cupcake in your room. These were the days of turndown service and pillow chocolates. It wasn't big, but it was fairly consistent. Then everyone started saying they were celebrating something to get the freebie. So now its just part of the script, attached to your reservation, and you might get a mousekeeper who leaves a towel animal and a note - but likely nothing - you can pick up a button though.

I think they just ask so that if you have one, you can tell them! I know there have been times they had the buttons ready!

We stayed at Kidani recently for our 50th anniversary and received nothing. Not even a Happy Anniversary on the tv. I know nothing is guaranteed, but I was a little disappointed.

While they've asked the question earlier, I think it became so much part of routine in 2009 (?) during the "What will you celebrate?" promotion -- the year they gave free admission on your birthday. Before that it was hit or miss whether the question was asked. Since then it's a constant and really pushes the idea of celebrating, which in turn leads to less of the pixie dust another poster mentioned because everyone ends up celebrating something.

We asked for buttons when we checked in for our 45th anniversary trip. We were wearing our buttons when we received a special dessert at two places we dined.
We also got a lot of nice congratulations greetings from CM's.

Have you ever been asked this or Are you celebrating anything? while working on a reservation with Member Service?

It happened at least twice and I felt awkward both times. My real answer would have been No....I just want to go or I'm addicted to Disney but I said something like I am celebrating Disneyland 70th!

Were they going to pixie dust me? Being nosy? I wondered that later.

At the time I felt sorta weird like I don't have a good enough reason & like I want to hide the fact that I felt a bit spoiled and yet quite excited at the same time. 😬

Has this happened to you? How did you feel if you weren't celebrating anything special?
Honestly is the best policy.

It's a very normal question they ask. No, it's not likely that you'll get any pixie dust when you go.
This. We were staying in a grand villa and let them know we were having our wedding on Disney property in Epcot, never received anything. I've quickly learned not to expect anything but the room with DVC because if you expect anything else, you will be disappointed.

It is best to expect only what Disney/DVC promises - the room you booked. Anything above and beyond is gravy and not expected.
