Is this excessive?

The rental company want's to charge 1/2 a day's rental charge plus tax to check-in one hour early. I think it's absurd. If the house is clean and ready...what is the big deal to check in one hour early. I've done it with other companies in the past without a charge. Is this the norm?

Overall, its just a minor inconvenience. What do you think?

I think it's excessive. I also think that I could find something to do for an hour rather than paying half a days rent.

Exactly, go have a long lunch.

I rent thru private owners and they seem to be very willing to bend the rules a little if possible, rental companies not so much.

Fairly normal for an MC, yes. Usually the issue is that the houses aren't clean until late afternoon, and need time to get cleaned. When a guest checks out in the morning, and someone else is checking in that afternoon, they have a very limited window to clean the place and get it ready. It's not like a hotel where it's probably just sitting there empty, chances are it won't be ready up until late afternoon.

When our homes are ready, we will let people check in early, but this usually isn't the norm.

Thanks for the quick response's. I should have mentioned that the house is rented through the Thursday before we arrive so it is only vacant for 3 day's. I doubt someone will rent a 4 BR for just those 3 days so I am fairly confident that it will be cleaned either Friday or Saturday and not the day we arrive (Sunday). Anyhow, I am planning to stop for a bite and than some grocery shopping. Its not a big deal. I was just wondering if it was normal or if I was getting a raw deal. I guess it is better to deal directly with the owner ;)

I wouldn't say it's a "raw" deal....you're getting what you paid for...which is rental of the home starting on a certain date and time and ending on a certain date and time.

I would agree it's a bit excessive of a charge though, but it's not out of the norm, especially if you're working with one of the larger MCs in the area they're well known for being pretty strict on their checkin and checkout times.

Usually an owner would accomodate you though if they could, at least in our experience.

don't do it-
go to Dunkin Donuts and get a coffee/tea and relax for that time~
vacations are $$ enough.
They are trying* to take advantage of you-don't let them!

enjoy your trip!!!

4/10 for 2 weeks Sunny FL! can't wait!:cool1:

I think it is a shame you can not enjoy the pool and amenities of the home if it is not occupied. If our home is not booked I always offer early arrival and late departure for free. What does it cost any one? That is very excessive of the MC.

Next time I would recomend you try to reach the owner directly and even if they do not do it for free offer an extra much smaller sum and I can not imagine if the home is not open to allow you to enjoy it.

I would imagine it keeps people from even asking if they can have an early check-in, as well.

"If ya reallllllllly want it, you'll pay for it", assumption.

Eliminates some extra administrative/cleaning scheduling issues right from the get-go:)

Have fun - and don't forget to post a review when you get home!!

I have to agree with what George and Deb said I think the charge is a bit on the high side and I think if you work with an owner directly they will be much more accomidating for you.
