Is this doable?

Hello, forgive me if this has been asked a thousand times, but

If I have X number of points available (assume I have nothing left to borrow from next year), and require X+50 for my stay, is it possible to somehow convert the 50 needed points to a dollar amount and pay for the difference?

Thanks a BUNCH!

you cannot mix cash and points for a single night.

you CAN try to reserve individual cash nights through MS and link the reservation with a pts reservation. sometimes they will discount the room 25%.

best of luck.

Hey, hey, hey!
No spreading addonitis to this poor unprotected OP!!! It's a tough bug to shake once you got it!
:lmao:

What's an add-on? Is that just buying extra points? I thought 160 was the minimum, or do you mean through a resale? If I seem rudimentary here, I'm currently in the fact-gathering stage and am seriously considering purchasing DVC points. THanks!

Oh my, you definitely need immunization against the nasty little DVC virus called "addonitis".
** WARNING ** CONSULT YOUR PHYSICIAN BEFORE PROCEEDING **

After the initial purchase into DVC, you get all exciting about membership. All the "welcome homes", all the trip planning, all the reservation bookings...
The desire to buy more sparks deep inside your gut.

At that point you know you have the genetics for the virus.

You start noticing that DVC will allow you to buy additional points for as low as 25 points at a time. A little bit later you realize there's never enough points or you start to realize you'd prefer bigger villas over those tiny studios all the time. You begin to wonder how you can come up with the finances to buy some additional points.

Now the virus wakes up from it dormancy and has begun to grow inside you.

At some point, you contact your Guide "just to talk to them" or you go to a DVC "event" somewhere. After wards, you know in your gut that you have to have more points in your life.
YOU NOW HAVE FULL BLOWN ADDONITIS!

Once you get it, it's a hard thing to get rid of. Sometimes just going back to your daily life paying the bills, going to work, arguing with the spouse or hollering at the kids can put it in remission. When those don't work, it's a serious condition ~ the virus takes hold and you buy more points!
:scared1:

Just remember, once you buy in to DVC, you can never be cured of the virus. It could be dormant for a very long time but you never get rid of it. Please, check with your doctor before trying any new medicine as side effects may be experienced.

I can attest that it is bad. Closed on my first resale contract Feb 2nd, and caught the virus in 5 days!!!!!!:lmao: Ended up adding on 130 BLT points.

Thought I shook it but it came back. Will be adding on another 50 at BLT next week.

My attack came about 45 days after initial purchase last June!!

I can't prove where the virus came from but I'm pretty darn sure my Guide slipped it in those free Coke's she gave me at the AKV model in Chicago. She was soooo nice and a joy to talk to and could have talked Disney all day with her (shameful behavior, I'd say)!

A couple times this year I've felt it in my gut but so far, no serious flare up.

Oh no, I should never have accepted the water from my guide at DtD last week.

I am currently addonitis free! I managed to immunize myself when we purchased the AKV add-on. Now my 3 contracts suit me just fine...That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!:thumbsup2

Yes, 160 is the current minimum new contract buy-in directly thru DVC. You can start smaller by buying resale. Once you are an owner you can add-on contracts in smaller increments (like 25 or 50 points at a time). Many people find 160 is not enough points unless they only want to go once every 2 or 3 years so they buy more on their initial contracts or they add on all the time (hence the term addonitis). Smaller contracts just take more planning to manage.

Since you haven't bought yet, note this - if you ever want to sell some points but not ALL you're better off having one large master contract that covers what you really think you'll need / want and then have smaller contracts that are easier to sell if you need / want to just unload SOME points. If you buy say 200 points and only want to sell 25 you can't split those 25 off the contract. It's all or nothing. So for example we initially bought 250 points - 200 in our master contract and another 50 in a 2nd contract. The 50 point contract was not an add-on, we set it up that way from the beginning with no extra fees or anything. We figured that way we could sell the 50 if we ever found we weren't using all the points or if we need some cash. Smaller contracts are usually easier to sell as there's always somebody looking to add on.

Also, back to your question about using cash. While you cannot split 1 night between points & cash you CAN book the entire night with a 25% DVC member discount on cash IF the size unit at the resort you want is available for your dates. It is not guaranteed to be offered tho and you MAY have to switch units. You can request to get the 2 ressies linked together & HOPE you will not have to move but it's not guaranteed.
