If I book a trip a little over 30 days out the 30 day cancel rule still applies. If the points are borrowed also and something happens these points would still go into holding?
In other words, borrowed points that are canceled 30 days in still get to go into holding?
So if my use year is December and we book for September now we have to go before the first of December if it is canceled. If nothing is available thru DVC will they let us use borrowed holding points for the Disney collection?

Thanks, just want to make sure I understand before I jump into any borrowing at this late in the game.

I believe the borrowed points are not borrowed anymore. They are considered in holding. Holding points can only be used at earliest 60 days from arrival date. If you don't use them by the end of your use year (Dec) you lose them.

I may be wrong, but, I also believe you can not use the points from a holding account for the Disney Collection or CC or anything other than DVC in the last 60 days of the use year. You may want to check on that, because if there is no DVC available, you may also be limited to other ways to use the points if it's near the end of your UY.

Yes, and no. Since borrowed points can not be banked, they must be used by December 1st. However, you must remember the 60 day rule. Within the last 60 days of your use year, you can not book, and stay anywhere but the DVC resorts.
You have a somewhat of a tight window here. In addition to the 60 day rule, you also can not use holding points more than 30 days prior to check-in.

By my calculations, you will have the time between your cancellation, and September 31st to book a trip that falls before December 1st. --Tight window indeed. Make sure to cancel as soon as you know in order to maximize time.

Good luck, Shan...

EGADS! I don't know what to do! That is confusing stuff for sure!

Hubby got me all excited about getting away and now every date I present to him is no good for his work. :( It now looks like much of September is out, we're looking into October now and there is extremely little availability when i called MS. How would a trip the first weekend in October changes things as far as holding cause I'm really confused!

If you book a stay starting Oct 1, you have to cancel before September 1 to avoid the holding account. To book a non-DVC, you have to book before September 30 for a stay in October or November.

Just to clarify, they changed the holding account usage to 60 days a few years back. At least gives us a chance to get decent air fare. ;)

Shan -- Let's walk through it.

You book a trip in October using current points and some points that you borrow from your December 2004 allotment. The borrowed points must be used for a stay with a check-out no later than December 1.

For you current December 2003 points, if you cancel prior to August 31, you can bank points equal up to 50% of your total allotment of points. If you cancel between September 1 and September 30, you could bank up to 25% of your total allotment. Beginning October 1, your banking deadlines are over and all points must be used by 11/30/04.

As far as Holding Account, once you get into the window of being 30 days from check-in, your points will go into a Holding Account. They can only be used for reservations that are made 60 days or less prior to arrival during the current Use Year. The points can't be banked or borrowed. They will expire on 11/30/04. You can use them for non-DVC options.

As mentioned, your non-DVC options will also be limited by the fact that you cannot make a reservation during the last 60 days of your Use Year. To use the points for a non-DVC trip, you'll have to cancel the WDW trip and re-book prior to October 1. You can travel during October and November but can't make reservations.

Traveling toward the end of your Use Year is really the only time that Use Year comes into play. This is a good example of that.

I would plan a trip using as few borrowed points as possible. I would also keep Vero and/or HHI in mind as alternatives if you did have to cancel the dates of your WDW trip and weren't able to reschedule.

Happy Planning!

Thanks everyone. Hubby is making me depressed. I don't think he understands that we need to book now. He suggests an alone trip, I get excited, but yet nothing is good for him. :(

I decided if he works it out with work fine, but I'm not gonna say anything else. Maybe by the time he checks everything will be booked! Plus, I have to make sure our parents can watch the kids. Only date that is good for him my parents are out of town.

I want to cry!

OK, enough venting! :sunny:

So now we're looking at the first weekend of October, 2nd thru 5th. So even if we cancel regardless if it is borrowed points thirty days before the trip they go into holding. If we rebook before the first of October we should be able to book at a mod with points before the first of my December use year if all the DVCs are full. After that we can only book at a DVC and might not have any availability.

OK, did I get it right now? ::yes::

Thanks!

Holding Account

Any time you change or cancel a Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation 30 days to one day before your scheduled arrival date, the Vacation Points used for that reservation are put into a Holding Account.

What you need to know about using Holding Account Vacation Points:

1. You can use these Vacation Points for a new Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation during your current Use Year as long as you book the reservation 60 or less days before the new check-in date.

2. You can use these Vacation Points for an exchange through The Disney Collection, Concierge Collection, Adventurer Collection, and World Passport Collection if you make the reservation 60 or less days before the new arrival date and more than 60 days before the end of your Use Year.

3. You cannot bank or borrow these Vacation Points.

4. These Vacation Points will expire at the end of your Use Year if they aren't used.

You need to get this settled and done now. Make your best guess for when you're going and try to make any cancellations or changes befoer the 1 of Oct. Remember you can always rent them out or deposit with II as long as you're more than 60 days from the end of your use year. Furthermore, if you deposit with II, you want the week to start more than 60 days from when you deposit it. Don't forget about the one time double secret banking option, it might be worth it in this situation if things don't work out. Don't use it or even mention it right now but if you get stuck, that's when to pull the ace out of your sleeve.

Thanks. I think hubby thinks we can just call up any day and get what we want. At least he is acting like that. I thought he understood DVC, but then again I plan all our vacations.

As it was only studios we could get were at OKW and two weekends I asked about were booked everywhere.

Maybe I should just book at PC with that $49 discount pin email I got today and be done with it. I just didn't want to really stay values for a romantic getaway, but at least it is cheap, I won't be tying up a large amount of money and I can cancel late. Man...

Dean, this trip would only take 37 points. Would you use a special one time banking on that little amount of points? Hubby said just book it, if we lose the points whatever, but he said it mean. :sad1: I was hoping to get this taken care of today.

Thinking... I'm just gonna call and book PC right now and not tell him. Then when he comes thru with an OK for the date, if OKW is booked at least we'll have PC.

No, I would not waste your option on that few points. Make your best guess and book it. If that isn't working make the latest reservation you can for November so if you have to change or cancel you'll have the longest time to work with. Still that doesn't give you a lot. You may want to consider just renting out the points or the reservaiton then you could pay cash or possibly borrow points if you ended upgoing. Or possibly even better to plan a trip with or without him. Good luck.

Do you need to borrow ALL the points or just some? If not all then I would book what you can with current points and book PC for the rest. Then when you know for sure see what you can get for the rest of the days w/DVC. Don't forget to play it with your banking/31 day rule to your advantage.
