I was driving around my neighborhood yesterday (Queens, NY) and noticed how many streets have been named for people who died on 9/11.

Underneath the actual street (i.e. 60th Street) there will be another sign that says "Firefighter John Smith Way" or something similar. The street I live on has such a sign for a young man who lived here that died in the World Trade Center that day. His parents still live here and there was a dedication of the street a while back.

Is this common across the country? Not necessarily just for 9/11; but the naming of streets for local heroes?

We have plenty of honorary streets in Chicago. I believe by the site of the first Playboy club there was/maybe still is a Hugh Hefner way. I guess that sign was pretty popular to swipe.

I noticed that in Queens also. I just assumed it was throughout all the boroughs. Manhatten is fulled with streets renamed.

They do it on the Long Island too, but not as much.

I've never seen any streets in Nassau or Suffolk Cty with that. The only one I can think of that comes close is "Veterans Memorial Highway". Closer to Sunrise Hwy on the bridge heading Eastbound, there is a sign that says POW/MIA.

our town (western suffolk) has streets, as well as playground/parks either "added to" or renamed in honor of ppl lost on 9/11.

I live in a small NJ suburb and three people from my town died in 9/11. We renamed two streets and a small park after them.

I live in Nassau, and in my town there are two street signs that were placed underneath the original street sign indicating a fallen firefighter with their names

Another Long Islander here. We have streets with the names of the fallen also. They name parks, streets etc. They just add the name underneath or they name a stretch of a road.

I think it is a really nice gesture. I hope their families get some comfort from seeing the signs.

LOL, That goes to show ya how often I drive around! Just to and from work (E. Patchogue to Bohemia and back). I gotta get out more

I don't think we can do enough for the families of those people who went into the buildings after the attacks to try to save as many people as they could.

Around Chicago we've never had an event like 9/11 so our 'heros' on honorary ways are sometimes more political and controversial. There was a Black Panther who repeatedly called for cops to get killed who's name was up for a Street last year.

I think I read we have around 1000 here.

I know for sure of at least one street in Nassau county that has that. He was FDNY and a volunteer firefighter in our town. It the street he lived on which also happens to be right next to the volunteer fire house he served

ETA- wow we have a lot of Long Islanders on this board!

Suffolk county Long Island here, our town has a street named after a father and son who perished in 9/11. Both were NYC and Volunteer Firemen.
