or, we had the stores that never, ever carded. :teeth:

And showing what a bad kid I was....you should have seen my fake ID. It was my friend's brother's girlfriend's old ID (got that?)

She had HUGE permed hair, I had my hair shaved off!!! The only similarity is that we are both Italian.
No one blinked an eye back then....(late 80's/early 90's)

We just went to bars, where they were way less likely to card. You sent someone in for a few 6-packs and if they asked for ID, said it is in the car and get out of there quick...

I mean, that's what I heard other people did...

Yep, they sold on SUNDAYS....and were usually run by "Patels". :teeth:

Very stupid rule and definitely not a solution to ANY problem associated with people buying alcohol for minors. It's not like the only people you could possibly be giving alcohol to are the ones standing right next to you when you check out.

I agree with you both and this is the exact reason why when I was a teen I did not go in with the person who was buying alcohol for us. :teeth:

This law is just STUPID!

Oh, I'm sure that's what they do now and have been doing for years, as evidenced by some of the previous posts. :teeth: :teeth: These laws aren't doing anything to prevent underage drinking.

We didn't have pictures on licenses when I was underage, it made it much easier :lmao:

Here in PA we don't sell alcohol in grocery stores but I worked at a grocery store and I would not sell cigarettes to two people who looked to be closer to 18 if both of them did not present ID to me. It's too much of a risk to sell to someone and have them give it to someone else, Not only could I have lost my job but I would have been fined severely. Just not worth it to me. My bosses always backed me on this decision.

tricia.

We must have been smarter because they come in in groups now...then they split up when they get to the registers and act surprised when we want ID from them all. After a few times you'd think they would get the hint and just stay outside! :teeth:

I've had this situation happen (again, with cigarettes rather than alcohol), in the case I told the girl I would not sell her the cigarettes. I told her she might as well go to another store.

While I understand the laws aren't perfect and are easy to get around, I would not be willing to lose my job and get fined (by law) for one disgruntled customer that wanted me to go against store policy.

tricia.

Ah, thanks.

I am not condoning underage drinking or breaking the law, but I would think that if a person purchased something, it no longer belonged to the store but to the person. If the person chose to give it away, then I don't understand why the store would be liable. But then there are a number of laws I don't understand. If Betty buys a gun, for example, then the store is not responsible if she uses it to rob a bank- the store no longer has ownership of the item.

Just wanted to say ...ME TOO! How weird. I am standing inline with my husband of 5 years and my 2 year old daugher at the time, and they want everyone Inline's ID before they will sell my husband a 3 dollar bottle of wine. As if that wasn't embarrasing enough already! LOL

I have been boycotting TGI Friday's for over a dozen years now, over an incident that occurred when I was 21.

At the time, I did not drive, but I had a state issued ID card. I was sitting with three friends, all over 21, all with driver's licenses. They ordered drinks, I ordered a coke. The waiter would not serve my friends their drinks because I didn't have "acceptable" ID. We called the manager over, and he just shrugged his shoulders and said that their policy was that state IDs weren't acceptable because they were considered too easy to fake. So I said - what if I were paraplegic, or blind, or had some other physical reason why I could not get a driver's license? He just kept saying "sorry, that's the policy. Driver's license or nothing."

And even though I wasn't the one ordering the drink, no one at my table could have alcohol because of my ID. And, would we please leave the bar area and go sit at a table in the restaurant itself.

I still remember how embarrassing it was to be asked to leave the bar, in fact, our entire party left the restaurant itself, in disgust, and as I said, I haven't eaten at a Friday's since.

A state non-drivers ID card isn't acceptable??? I have never heard that before. That is one of the 4 legal types of ID we accept for purchases of alcohol and tobacco.

Probably not a law--but a store policy. Probably from the risk of minors having adults purchase them alchohol.

Not saying it was wise to be insistent with your BF.

But when I was a cashier--if it looked questionable, we were to card everyone and not sell unless proof ID was shown.

A store can be in a heap of trouble for selling alchohol to just one minor.

In this case though--dumb!

Im glad to see that our lawmakers have so much time on their hands that they can come up with such idiotic laws. The cities must be crime free and all criminals must be in jail. Do the lawmakers have nothing better to do then come up with something as stupid as making someone whos not purchasing alcohol show ID? Lamest thing Ive ever heard.

The store covering its behind by carding the person buying is very prudent, but carding everyone with the party buying alcohol or tobacco products is just asinine, IMO.

So I can wander into a liquor store, buy a case of whiskey and hand out bottles to every minor I see outside. However, if I go in with my DH and discover that he forgot his ID, I can't buy a single beer. That is insanity! :lmao:

As for refusing to sell the beer or the cigarettes to someone who went out and then came back, would you EVER sell to them again or would you always assume that their evil adult friend or spouse might be hiding just outside? :teeth:

I'm sorry but this is so silly.

That's what I thought!!! Will they "always" think that I have someone without ID who may or may not be 21 outside waiting for me?? :lmao:

Will I be forced to be sober??? :furious: :teeth:

I work at a Super Target so basically a grocery store and I've never been told that I have to card everyone in the party. Actually they tell us to only card those that look 40 and younger. If they look older than 40, you don't have too. I rarely ever card unless they look really young. I guess that should be obvious, but hey.
