Is this a bad use of points

There are NO bad uses of points if it's something you would really enjoy!

I don't agree with this. I would love to stay in a GV with my family. given there are only 4 of us yep it would be a bad use of points.

OP only you can decide what the value you place on your points. For my family they would not want to go down to a smaller room.

There has to be an exception to that statement.
What if a spouse was a last-minute convention attendee at the Contemporary, and the only DVC available was a BLT MK view GV, and it was over NYE or 7/4 and you could watch the extra-special fireworks, and the spouse could get reimbursed for hosting a sales reception in the LR...

But the kids would get too used to having their own suite (room/bath) and then they would complain about that on every future trip...so you are right, it would be a bad use of points ;)

I get a BC at Vero for my family because we like it so much. There are 6 or 7 of us in it and I get OVIRs for the others. People pay for business class on airplanes when coach can get you there too.

OP if you still want to stay at the Poly, I hope you do it, but if you wanted to be dissuaded of that decision, you came to the right place!

Whether it is a good use or bad use of points who cares!!

The fact that we have these choices available to us is great!!! It allows all of us the flexibility to try different things, be it BLT MK view or standard view, studio, 1 BDR or 2BDR or GV, the Poly, cruises or even RCI.

We can all choose to save our points and extend our trips or splurge on shortened trips. Freedom of choice is wonderful!!:yay:

Thank you all for your opinions and help in this situation. I am still undecided. I am waitlisted for BLT so if that came through than I would not go to Poly. I just love the dining choices there and the beach to watch wishes and EWP and the monorail. It has always been a resort that we go to every visit to have dinner and I always say someday I want to stay here.

Hopefully your problem will be solved when (if) they build a DVC component at Poly.

I don't agree with the bad use of points.

They are mine the monetary value of them is no different than the monetary value of anything else.
If I wish to spend it then it is good for me.

I am taking my Mom to WDW and we will be getting a two bedroom so we have two bathrooms, two bedrooms and a living room.

It is worth it to me to spend the points to be very comfortable and have privacy.

I assume you're referring to me and my post. In no way did I tell the OP how to use their points. If pointing out the truth about the use of points in such a way offends anyone, then they'll simply have to be offended. Everyone has the right to make their own choices but simply because they chose to use points in a certain way doesn't make those choices good ones, it depends on the specifics of the situation.

Sorry I was not referring to you. I had not even seen your post when I posted.

I was referring to the overall tone that tends to be present where posters are told how "bad" it is to do "xyz" with their points.

We try to use our points wisely BUT there are times when we splurge. I think this is one time where you should splurge!!!!

This is probably not the most fiscally prudent use of points, but hey, we own timeshares which in general are not very fiscally prudent. Timeshare ownership allows us to own something we love and feel we will use frequently and "hope" that it all breaks even in the end.

As I stated, everyone has to judge their specific situation and make a decision, however, that someone decides it's a good decision doesn't make it so nor does it remove others right to form an opinion on that decision.

As I noted, I rarely see that as the case, actually I don't recall a single episode off hand where anyone was inappropriate when offering an opinion that certain choices are bad ones in this vein. What I have seen often is those who take any opinion that does not fit their choices as an affront, as I posted above.

I will correct myself on one thing, I see posters telling other posters all the time how they should use the points but only when it comes to renting.

Exactly I am sure some financial advisors would say DVC or any timeshare is not a good use of the money, even for taking regular vacations.

This would assume retail purchases. Even with the downturns, I could get out of all of my timeshares and come out ahead.

I think the point that many of the point police (myself included at times) try to make is the following. The three nights at Poly would cost 149 points, if you rented those out at $10/pt you'd have $1490 to put toward the cash ressie. If it costs less than $1490 to pay cash then the "cheaper" way to do it would be rent the points and pay cash. Depending on the difference in cost, the "hassle" of renting may make it worth it to just exchange the points, or maybe it doesn't.

Distressed points are another issue, but if you're not in danger of losing the points and therefore have to use them soon, you should consider all of the alternatives.

For a few nights the difference may not be material, but if someone is talking about a full week that's when it gets really outta whack.

Chris

OP, over 18 years, we've used our points in this way several times - at the Poly, GF, YC, and GC before they built the villas there, on one cruise, and a few hotels from the Conceirge Collection. They were all memorable trips. The Poly is magical. Good luck with your decision.
