My DH and DF are fans of TX hold-em and with the recent popluarity of the game we were wondering if it was offered as an activity on board? A tournament would be a great idea!!

as far as I know there is no gambling on the ship for adults except for BINGO .... they may have it in the oceaneer club though (could not help that one) ;)

:rotfl:

You mean Texas Hold 'em is not just a local thing for us here?

I thought it was a Texas secret!

Ohmom...........great idea!!!!!! We play once a month with some of the neighbors and go from house to house.....we played a little poker on deck 10 on sea days last Turkeyday sailing.....I have a kit I could bring on ours.....

Boy, my husband and brother would love that! Actually I love to play too.....it's our weekly thing now :)

nope, no gambling onboard outside of Bingo.

Wouldn't it be great if they turned one of the adult clubs into a Casino!!!. If Disney ever figures out the fortune they would make it would happen in heart beat!!!

I am pretty sure DCL knows how much money they could make with a Casino...I believe that since it is basically a family-oriented cruise that they consciously decided not to have a casino.....

I would not doubt that future DCL ships may have one, though....as it it a huge money maker....that way people who were bothered by a Casino could go on one of the non-casino DcL ships...just my opinion.

We're with mmouse37, one of the reason we choose and stick with Disney is the fact there is no casino. Like the wholesome family atmosphere much better. There are pleny of ships with casinos to choose from.

The original plans for the ship had the Promenade Lounge listed as the Casino (per a Dinsey Project Manager I once shared a table on DCL). But obviously they decided to not have one for some reason (the "why" I don't know or don't remember if I was told). Obviously a casino would bring in more money that "yet another lounge", so Disney has their reasons for not having a casino.

What I don't understand is what is so "WRONG" about a casino when they obvioulsy don't have any issues with drinking.

I personally have nothing against a casino (other than the smoke issue... which I think would be much more pervasive than currently in the clubs.

My feeling on this issue is this ... I live near CT where there are a few casinos. When I go there and see kids sitting in the hallway with grandparents and waiting for their parents who are obviously playing games it disgusts me. I like to gamble, but I choose disney for this family vacation not to be detracted by the casino. Besides DCL offers many things to do to suplement this. If you want to gamble take the 3 or 4 night and go to nassau for a day. Just my opinion.

True story from am "insider".....When DCL started to build the ships and set pricing...they did surveys....would you pay a little more and have no casino or have pricing be more competative and have a casino (losses would off set ticket prices) and most surveyed (Disney people) wanted a "family" atmosphere. As the popularity grows that doesnt mean that can't change.....the reason "beat street" is off the beaten path.......

well maybe DCL will add a tournament as an activity before thanksgiving :) otherwise, Lampy, we'll just make our own! love that!

i for one like there being no casino on board and do know that i LOVE LOVE vegas! I just thought with the popularity of poker nowadays they could have a scheduled activity (i.e. tournament) just as bingo is run now.

We occasionally hit the bar poker here in town. I love it since there is NO money involved--I am chicken to play poker in a casino! And I really enjoy table games at casino--but I'm sure I'd get outbet in a poker game every time! This bar poker is nice, cuz I can just play for fun!
I will miss the casino, but had no kids with on last cruise. I think a deck of cards and some chips along is a good idea. Family can always make our own little tourney on board!
Happy cruising!

My DH plays frequently here in Kansa and would love to have a friendly game or two on our 14 night cruise in August.

We're on the 14 night in August. My DH loves playing hold-em. I actually enjoy it too. We play the free games online... poker stars. I'm sure my husband would be happy to join in if a group forms on our cruise.

Given that Disney is sailing year round, sold out without a casino, at premium fares, I suspect they won't be adding a casino anytime soon.

During my trip, I had tried to organize a Hold 'em game with the people in my "Who's Going" thread.

Many people said yes, so I brought chips and cards. Even got DCL to lend me a conference room on the second deck (ahh, the power of concierge....).

Three people showed up. No game. Oh well.

The problem is, once you're on board, finding the time to play is harder than you think.

As I don't gamble, I don't mind the lack of a casino on board. On the other hand, as for the lack of a ship's library . . . ?

No, there are a number of meeting rooms, of various size, on board ship. You might see about booking one of them, with the understanding you want to play Texas Hold-em Poker with a few friends. And if that is not possible, one could retire back to one's cabin for a game. I doubt if Disney would mind, especially as I know some of the teens on board, have played strip poker in theirs.
