Because she keeps displaying odd behavior.

Like licking the carpet. Thoroughly, aggressively even.

Any thoughts?

Time to go to the Vet and get her checked out.

yeah, I'm afraid they might want to check her IN when I take her.

How old is your dog and what breed is he/she? I have a couple of compulsive lickers but they always have been. So is this a new behavior?

And could you have possibly spilled something on the carpet?

We have a dog that has digestive problems who does this when she's feeling sick. It's related to the instinct that makes them eat grass outside when they're not feeling well - so they can throw whatever it is up.

I'd take her to the vet. She may have something going on that makes her want to throw up. Is she trying to eat grass when she's outside?

You know, my dog is having the same problem. I keep trying to get her to stop. I think it's gross. She sees one crumb on the carpet and she's there.
But my dog also will take one piece of food out of the dish and throw it on the ground, then bat it around like a cat. THen she picks it up in her mouth and throws it. Bats it around more..and then eats it. She's like a cat. LOL

This may sound strange but animals get bored !We had a adog that would chew on wooden table legs after taking her to the vet (everything checked out ok) the vet concluded she was bored and to give her lots of different toys to play with . :sunny: :confused3

Perhaps it is that the dog is bored, have you considered getting another dog?

I think maybe some dogs are just lickers...Shenzi licks the carpet, sofa, toes...

Well, you can be thankful that your dog isn't aggresively rubbing something other than his tongue on the carpet...ya know?

I think some dogs are lickers and that there can be physical causes, so I would check in with the vet...but you should seriously consider boredom as others have mentioned - is yours one of the breeds that needs to be "worked"...some need this daily....does it get plenty of excersise and stimulation for the type of breed it is - as I understand it, not meeting these needs can lead to behavior problems, aggressiveness(I realize this is not a problem for you), etc...

I have had cats that are "lint suckers" but I think that comes from too early weaning.....

I do wish you luck - let us know what you find out!!!!!

:wizard:

Hmmm. We have a female dog as well, but she's never exhibited that kind of behavior. Of course, we have hardwoods downstairs, so not many carpet licking opportunities down there (thankfully she doesn't lick the wood, I'm afraid she'd warp it). Although, now that I think about it, I will say, one day I saw her coming out of the closet (upstairs -- it's a walk-in, where there is carpet), and I later noticed the carpet was a little damp. I wouldn't worry too much about it, if I were you -- it's probably just a phase that will pass. In the meantime, maybe try spraying a little bitter apple on her favorite licking place to discourage her? That could work.

Someone needs to PM me. Cause apparently I have really missed out. On something. Good thing I have cats!

That is an interesting suggestion. Since the dog is a female, would you suggest a male or a female companion? Which gets along better with your dog do you think?

I'm a golden retriever. I have only compulsively licked anyone who ventured into my territory until now.

My suggestion would be to keep the kids off the carpet - just have them put the stuff directly in my bowl, it's faster that way.

Grass is icky. I haven't tried it in months. Don't you know what I DO on the grass?

Are you sure she's a dog? Sounds like she needs to be checked out, too.

Well, certainly. Have you ever spoken with GeorgiaAristocat? She's boring. Really.

Well, I might consider some companionship, or even a civil union. Maybe.

Does your dog need companionship, too? And I'm confused. Did she leave you a "present" in the closet, or did she just need to come out of the closet?

I hear ya on the just put it in my bowl thing, it is much easier, however I do like to play with my food.

I like grass. It's yummy. Although sometimes grass doesn't like me. I'm just saying.

Yes I am a dog. I know that for sure. I am NOT a cat. Ugh.

Civil Union....is that allowed?

Maybe we could go to a dog park someday. It could be fun.

Maybe he's thirsty? And confused? We had a dog once who would lick at puddles. Or not actual puddles, but the muddy spot where a puddle used to be. Because he was thirsty and demented.
