Is there "no going back" once you've stayed at a Deluxe?

I have stayed at CBR, ASMo, ASMu and YC in that order. The only reason we stayed at YC this trip was because of an upgrade that allowed us to stay there for $104 per night. While the resort was quite beautiful and the room was fantastic the location was the best part. Will we be able to happily go back to All Stars again? I don't know. To me the more times you go to WDW the more important the resort experience becomes. You've already done most everything there is to do and I think you take a little more time to smell the roses and take things a more leisurely pace and spend more time at the resort than previous times. Will I go back to All Stars? probably not. Will I go back to YC? probably can't afford to. Will I stay off-site? never. Will I go to a moderate? most likely....

For the location convenience of BC/YC/BW but much cheaper price, stay at Swan/Dolphin. They have some great rates--$129 teacher/govt/nurse/entertainment book, $139 AP rate, $99/night Aug. 28-Sept. 9. It's a deluxe resort for moderate prices.

Is it too hard to stay at a Deluxe and then on your next trip have to go back to something "less"?
For me it is not hard at all, but I am picky about which resorts I choose...for instance I have no problem switching between CBR and BC or BWI. I think CBR is just as nice in it's own way and I take each resort individually....to ME, CBR is a wonderful paradise and my room is always a King there and so it feels spacious, and I don't feel that BC or BWI (unless you get a suite) are THAT much bigger....I love the resort feel of CBR and would choose that over AKL, its just my personal preference. Not that AKL is not nice, but it's not my preference and though we could afford it, I am not interested in the GF, I choose CBR over GF, just because GF really isn't my style, it's too hotel like for me. Now as for the values, which I have never stayed at all, they aren't my style, maybe because I do not have children. I am glad that I don't get into that habit of "I have stayed deluxe and now can't go back"...it's bad enough that I am in the "I won't stay anywhere but a WDW resort property" mode. And if fact, only recently have I entertained the idea of possibly giving the S or D a try. (I am ONLY entertaining that idea.....lol)

Over the past few years, it has become very important to me to have a balcony that opens onto the outside. Maybe it is because we are a family of 5. It doesn't really bother me if I'm alone traveling on business, but anymore I just hate to be in a room when the only thing that opens is the door to the outside. As far as I can tell, Deluxes have balconies, and the Moderates don't.

I think everyone has their own personal preferences and set of priorities that they require when choosing their resort. Like Missypie said, she has a preference for balconies (private ones in Deluxes) and mods don't have them, so to her going to a moderate may be like stepping down, but to me, a private balcony means nothing, unless I am on a cruise, because we rarely sit out for long periods of time on a balcony...we maybe stand on it a few minutes at a time to look out, but we are always on the go. So really, no one can definitively say "once you stay at a deluxe you will never go back to something less"
because what is less to one may not be to another. I guess you have to just try it and see.

You can and sometimes it is worth it.

With little kids, a monorail resort is SO convienent - and the luxuries of a Deluxe are really nice since you spend more time in your room and around the resort - swimming, napping, getting in early. When they are four to six, you get the advantage of the kids clubs with nice restaurants close by. Yes, you can still do this by driving from the AS, but it is so nice to be right there.

Once the kids are a little bigger, the food courts of the Moderates and Values have more appeal - the kids can commando the park and you aren't there anyway but to sleep and shower.

Back to Deluxes once the kids leave home and you aren't buying their park passes anymore - this time towards the Epcot area.

I did a honeymoon with the icky ex starting at the Poly and then moving to the CBR. The Poly was wonderful - and a great honeymoon spot, but we weren't disappointed by the CBR.

We stayed deluxe, then all stars, then deluxe, then moderate, then deluxe - and oh yes, a lot of offsite in there too.

I think it is the people ON the vacation that determine the vacation - not the place they sleep in...as long as the room is clean and in decent shape. I personally prefer a balcony and a deluxe, of course, who wouldn't...but prefer vacationing even more! :-) It's never been hard for us to switch around to different places - I just focus on what is special about a particular place and get jazzed about it (okay - that was a plug for ASMu) regardless of where we are staying.

I've stayed in a variety of the WDW resorts and I've had wonderful,"magical" moments at all of them. I've even stayed concierge level but am not at all disappointed that I'll be staying at the AS movies for this next trip.

I put a great deal of thought into my resort choice this time because it will be my sister's first trip to WDW (she is 40 years old). The value resorts won out for 2 reasons: 1) I could afford to book two rooms so that there will be no "fighting" over the bathroom (I'm not sure just how "high-maintenance" my sister might be), and 2)the bold theming at the AS Movies will have us completely immersed in "Disney fun" for our entire 8 days!

I've had great service at all the resorts no matter what their category. I believe you'll have a memorable time no matter what price range you choose. I know I've been "spoiled" EVERYTIME!

We have had no problem going from Moderate to Deluxe to Value and back to Moderate at all. It is all in your expectations.
