Is there anyone left who knows the difference?

My DS took his pre-K class at a public school. It lasted about 5 days, when a note from the teacher came home and it said, "He done good". We quickly enrolled him in a private school and he is now in 2nd grade and smart as a whip!!

I'm such a grammar freak that when I get forwards to my email (jokes, stories, poems, etc.) I CORRECT them before I send them out again!

How's THAT for the grammar police!! :lmao:

I'm walking through the hall at the elementary school where I teach and one of the bulletin boards said "Fallen' for Fall." I mentioned this quietly and privately to the teacher that it should be Fallin' as the apostrophe is meant to replace the g in falling while fallen is a complete word... I mean they could have put it as I've Fallen for Fall and that would have been fine if it had no apostrophe. The teacher said a parent volunteer had done it and she didn't want to make them feel bad by changing it. I guess it's better for 600 students plus parents and staff to walk by it every day for a month then hurt someone's feelings. Really, I understand that no one can get it all right all the time... I don't, but a hall bulletin board should be correct. :confused3

Hahaha! See I messed up right there. I should have said "walk by it every day for a month than hurt someone's feelings." At least I didn't put it on a bulletin board ;)

That's the one that bothers me, switching "then" and "than." I was correcting DS's English paper the other night and he even did it.

I think a lot of people on the boards just type too fast and don't realize they've made an error most of the time.

While we are on the subject, I also can not stand the use of "?" when people mean "question".

"Main Street ?"

"I have a quick ? about Epcot!"

Also the use of "????????????????????????" and "!!!!?!??!?!??!!!!!!?!"

Oh, no way. I love that! It saves me so much time. Time is $!

No, but really, I think that's more on the lines of text lingo type stuff. Also, do you have any idea how much time I spend deciding exactly how many !!!s and ?????s I'm going to use? Do you know how I agonize about which one should go first and how many of which in which order. It's truly distressing. What if I meant to say ???!!!???!!! and I actually typed ??!!!??!!!??? Oh, the social conflict!!!!?!!!!?!!!!!. Yes, that felt just right :rotfl2:

Really, though most of that is just plain fun to me.

Ah, it's very relaxing to me to read all of this proper grammar. I love Duffy's signature. You make kitty cry! :sad1: Improper pluralization (is that a word?) is probably my biggest peeve. That, and anything from DD's school with simple grammar mistakes. :sad2:

Does not really bother me, I am not really here to pick on grammar mistakes of others but on the meaning behind the worlds. ;)

I could of listed all the thing's that bother me about the grammer I seen hear. But, that would prolly of been a waste of my time. I could of been making all my dinning ressie's instead of righting all those things anyways.

This has been a public service announcement.

Thank you.

;)
I do, I do!! Not a product of America's public schools though. I'm a product of 12 years of Catholic school, so I know proper grammar and learn well under fear.:lmao:

Oh boy...:eek::headache: That's just sad.

I here ya!

I pointed this out on another thread a few weeks ago and was given quite a tongue-lashing. I'm so glad I can chime in here with Robo and not feel so ganged up on. I think the argument was something like some people are math majors, not English majors. I guess the math majors didn't take 7th grade English.

GO ROBO!! :goodvibes

I get such a kick when people are having a battle of wits here or on other message boards, when one person finally gets angry and says, "Your being rediculous!" :worship:

Man... I especially love it when I'm the other person in that battle of wits. I mean, it's an automatic win!

My grammar isn't perfect, and I typically type the way I think I sound, using (...) for my dramatic pause, and (') at the end of my country-soundin' words.

I know no one here intends to be hurtful - but your pet peeves can be hurtful to those of us who have processing disorders like dyslexia. When you point out all of the mistakes we make - which we work so hard to try not to make - it makes us feel like we are somehow "not worthy" of your conversation and attention. Please be kind and less judgemental

Actually, I do have dyslexia, but I agree with everyone about bad grammar. It makes it very difficult for me to understand. Sometimes I have to read a sentence several times before I finally understand it. It is so much easier to read posts that have good grammar and punctuation. I'm sure I make some mistakes when writing because my fingers get ahead of my brain, but some of this basic stuff we learned in elementary school.

Here's something fun to do that I learned in school. Punctuate this correctly:

That that is is that that is not is not is that it it is

Eh, there will always be people who don't know the difference between their, there and they're and they have as much right to ask questions or chat on message boards as anyone else. I don't really pay much attention.

That that is is. That that is not is not. Is that it? It is.

Is that it? :)

ROTFL
I'm not usually guilty of bad grammar but my spelling is attrocious (?) especially when I'm on my phone like I am now.I tell my kids it's proof that what you do as a kid can come back to bite you. In 3rd and 4th grade I used to cheat on spelling tests becuase my mother would not read me my words and I couldn't figure out how to study without help. Now I can spell long medical and psychiatric words but forget all those 4-6 letter ones!! I appologize to all those whose eyes hurt when they look at my posts...LOL Please forgive me!
