I went with 7 2GB SD cards on my last trip, though I was shooting RAW and only got about 330 or so pictures on each card. I get almost twice that if I shoot in JPEG. My camera has 6MP.

ok so what is RAW ...Heck i have no idea what mine are set to ...lol i guess i need to learn more about my camera ..It is a point an shoot dig kodak ...Maybe i dont have a choice with mine ...One good thing im learning more lol ..Thanks everybody ...lori :thumbsup2

Lori, what kind of cards does your camera take?

If its SD, then you can get 2GB cards for about $14. Amazon.com and buy.com both have the Kingston 2GB SD card for $14. Buy.com has it with free shipping, amazon you have to spend $25 for free shipping. 2GB CF cards start around $22 or you can get a 4GB CF card for about $36. newegg.com also has the Kingston 2GB SD card for $14 + shipping and a Kingston 2GB CF card for $24 w/shipping. 4GB CF cards there are around $30 and 4GB SD cards are around $25.

This might be your best bet.

IMO, its better to have to much memory than find out later that you don't have enough.

Handicap18 i use sd cards ..I almost fell over on how cheap that is ,omg i think my 2 gig i got was like 40 bucks back in spring....

wow you make it sound like every person carrying a laptop, should be carrying a backup, I know all hard drives will fail at some point in time, but if they are notoriously unreliable as you put it, I'd think college students everywhere would be toasting laptops daily, I know quaite a few who have made it thru 4 years of school with a laptop

I've ben using my portable storage unit for years with no problems, and I know a lot of pros that rely on them heavily..??

have we all been lucky ??
Yes, you've been lucky.

The failure rate for hard drives is much higher than any other modern storage media. If you think that because you haven't had a hard drive crash, that you won't have a hard drive crash and shouldn't be concerned about one, then you are living in Fantasyland. :teeth:

The problem really is that you can store so much on a hard drive, and if (when) it does fail, you're looking at losing a lot of irreplaceable data.

I just lug the handy dandy laptop with me. People think I am nuts but then I can burn a CD of pics each night.

I know it can happen, on the other hand I've had CDs and DVDs go bad on me, never my storage units..it's easier to recover files from a crashed hard drive, than from a bad CD or DVD...

I have always copied my pics to both storage units, for safety, odds of both failing on one trip are way out there..

the thing I don't get,, there are several people on this site, that are against using portable storage units, yet they are ok with using laptops, do they not use the same type of 2.5 hard drive..??

oh and although I do sometimes live in fantasyland I just bought one of these last week...

JOBO IMAGEMAESTRO PRO PORTABLE BURNER DVD MP3 USB 2.0

plus a laptop on black friday,
so although it may be overkill my next trip to WDW will see me taking 4 backup units with me...

The reason I like a laptop vs a portable hard drive unit is because you can burn DVDs with a laptop. My ideal situation is that each night, that day's photos will exist on the laptop's hard drive and a pair of DVDs. That's about as secure as you're going to get. :)

Sony (and one or two others) have devices that'll burn DVDs straight from a memory card with no PC required, but they're quite expensive - nowadays, if you keep your eyes open, you can get a fairly fully-featured laptop for $400 - some people pay that much just for a ball head. :teeth:
