I need to crush into tiny pieces some candy canes for some peppermint bark I'm going to make. What's an easy way to crush them? They rip through the plastic baggie because they're sharp pieces when I try to whack them with a hammer! Anyone have any idea?

I take mine out of the original wrapper and put them in a freezer bag. If freeze them first. Then I either use the food processor or hit them with the bottom of a heavy pan. They break better frozen for me, and the freezer bags are a bit thicker.

Put them in a heavier bag & hit them like a paper bag

I fhave a mortor & pestle (sp?) so I would use that. Otherwise, maybe put them into an old, clean pillowcase & whack 'em with a rolling pin or hammer.

I would crush them in a paper grocery bag. That won't rip if you whack them with a hammer. You could try paper towels too but I think that might get sticky.

I put them in a ziploc bag and then cover with an old dishtowel and then whack them.

I agree. I freeze the candy canes, lay them out on the driveway, then run over them a few times.

Of course, I don't really like candy cane. ;)

Food processor. Add a bit of powdered sugar to cut down on the stickiness.

I use my blender.. Works perfect and I can get the exact size that I want..:thumbsup2

The food processor makes it so much easier and a whole lot cleaner! Just be sure to put it on low and pulse it, otherwise you'll end up with peppermint dust (which is actually quite taste mixed in with whipped cream on top of hot chocolate!)

I use my Ultimate Chopper and they'd come out like powder if I hit the power button one too many times.
:rotfl:

I use my food chopper thing-y I got from Pampered Chef. You know, the Slap-n-Chop thing-y... Works great!!

A rubber mallet works better than a hammer, IMO.... But I also have put them in a foot processor.

I am digging up an old thread…I just had to share a laugh…

DD14 and were making peppermint bark and needed to crush the candy canes. She was using the Ziploc/towel/hammer technique and it was making a huge mess so I googled “best way to crush candy canes” and this was the #1 listing! TY my sweet dis friends…my food processor worked great! :lovestruc
